I wouldn't expect any noticable performance increase. What I would expect to see is easier starting, idling and cleaner plugs. Ever since I rejetted, added the pods and free-flow exhaust, I've had fouled plugs. After weeks of troubleshoting with the help of many technicians, we've narrowed it down to the coil\wire\cap\plug combination. I'll know in a week or so if that is indeed the case.

Hmmmm... I was told to expect performance increases. It did seem to idle slightly better though. I occassionally got the sound of a missing cylinder before, but now, it is more smooth.

It was not night and day though.

I was kind of expecting a "seat of the pants" difference with the new coils. Maybe there is an increase, but I just can't feel it. It is only slightly more blindingly fast!

Have you changed your jets/needles/air intake to pods (or K&N airbox filter) or free-flow exhaust yet?

The real crippler on these bikes is the analogy of trying to breath through a straw and void through the same. These bikes are purposefully restricted which lends itself to dependability and reduced maintainence. VolksWagen did the same thing to the original design of their air-cooled engines. Add dual carbs and a stinger exhaust to a 70's dual-port 1600cc Beetle and you'd swear you could lift the front wheels off the ground!

I don't think the same premise holds true for the Maxim X. From what I have heard, no one has ever successfully podded or done the exhaust.

I imagine that the engine would breathe too well at that point. 5 valves is probably enough.

Besides, more air flow equals more top horsepower, but that can sacrifice the mid range. Mid range is more important to me on the street.

    Hi All,

I did all of the surgery on the weekend and it was a success. My results are similar to Richard03, the idle is smoother and the bike appears to start more readily, but it's not an earth-shattering improvement.

I guess I feel better about the rain resistance now though.

I didn't really do any scientific measurements and because I changed the coils, wires, plugs, and caps all at once, it's hard to pinpoint what exactly is helping and what's just along for the ride. However, for about $200 in parts and 5 hours of my time I'm happy.

Thanks to everyone for their advice, I think I'm ready for the next challenge.

    Corey
