Removed the valve cover to see about measuring CAM clearance.
It smells like a gas station when I took off the cover.
Should their be any gas smell here?

Some, not real bad. To what degree it smells "like gas" is subjective. Check oil level to see if it has "gained." Petcock problems or a petcock left on "PRI" coupled with an occasionally balky float needle can cause "gas in the oil" syndrome. Check oil level and monitor regularly.

    Ok, here is the deal.
I checked the valve clearances and smelled gas while the cover is off.

After I was finished checking the clearances I drained the oil.
It smells a LOT like gas and is extremely thin.

I will refill with 20W50 and replace the filter.

This may explain why the bike has been running like crap.

It also means that you have a leaky petcock and float valves. Just curious...why do you capitalize the word cam in every post?

when was the last time you had the carbs cleaned? Are you running a inline fuel filter? The seat can sometimes get crap in them so the float valve will not close. Or your float valve rubber tips are no good also causing the valve to not seal right.

You have to do "Something" to prevent the Gas in the Tank from filling-up your Crankcase.
Overhauling the Petcock and Leak Testing
Carb Rebuilding and Installing New Float Valves and Seats

    -Or-

Use a Shut-off Valve between the Petcock and Carbs
    Close-off the Supply.

The Plastic Switch is a Briggs & Stratton Part
Comes ... Straight -or- Right Angled.

The gas tank has been off since I took off the carbs for cleaning over a week ago.

I am now using an 8 oz squeeze bottle with nipple that fits into the fuel line.

Bent a coat hanger to hang the bottle where the tank used to be.

Drained the gassy oil today and put in 2.5L of 20W50.

I have another set of carbs to play with and I will see if I can understand how the float needle works, etc.
