I got a XJ750R, and am looking at 550's. What size bikes do you have, and prefer?

I prefer bikes that weigh under 450lbs but still haul ass (and I don't like plastic.) My Norton falls into this category as does the 550 Seca. The chain-drive 550 has proven to be a bit quicker than XJ650s (sorry, true) and will darn near keep up with the 750. I like its balance, and it has no problem running along at 80-90mph in rush hour traffic. And I don't care if "your boat has a bigger motor than my boat" so the 550 suits me fine.

as far east as you can get in michigan 43.027407,
you left off the 900s from your poll...

ive got a 550 maxim but the seating is all wrong for me. ive got too long of legs...

my 750 seca is pretty much ideal at this point. good size physically and good haulability (im no lightweight)...

my 900 isnt together or running right now. i picked it up with a broken arm so ive not even sat on it in 'riding position'. ill have to wait until spring to see how it fits...

I'm 6'5" I couldn't DREAM of trying to ride a 550 Max but the Seca fits fine with lower bars on it. Your Venture is a 2-wheeled CAR, Carl.

Hey Fitz, you like the Seca 550, are they're better than the KZ550 for the same year?
Talk me out of a KZ550, and into the XJ550 Seca, I'm stuck between the two.

Take a good close look at both bikes and how they're made. The Kawasaki is a nice bike but simply not on the same "level" as the Yamaha. I always got the impression that Kawasaki expected their bikes to have a finite life while the Yamahas were built to last. Look at how many old Yamahas are still on the road; how many '80s Kaws do you see? Last but not least; from the saddle, look down. How WIDE is that motor compared to the Seca? On top of that, I personally find the 550 Seca to be one of the most classically styled of any of the 80s era bikes.

I really like my 650 - I used to have an XS850 that I loved. I may find another one one day.

The 650 has plenty of power and runs great but I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 550 either.

I have to agree with Fitz on the Kaws never owned one but have ridden a few, they don't seem to hold up well.

I have a 650, and I love it. I really don't have a comparison on any other bikes. Though, I think I'd like to have something that bigger with quicker get-up.

    750's are tops.
    Leg room- Me @ 6'
    Plenty of power- 120ish
Comfortable- I make 100 mile trips frequently. I stop when the tank is dry.
Decent gas mileage- ~42 now, but carbs have not be removed in a decade.
And a peg dragger, I run Metzler LaserTec tires and somehow seem to drag my foot pegs every morning :D
A great overall bike in my opinion that suits my needs. Time to start my maintinence regimine

I had a Yamaha XS 400 when I graduated high school. It was a fun bike for me then as a lightweight kid with little experience. I really like the Seca 750. I'm bigger and my wife likes to ride along - though she wants a backrest. I scare her when I open it up, still got plenty of jump for a 81. I like riding alone because it is still light enough to feel the lean into turns.

i had a KZ550 nice bike but i never rode a 550 yamaha to compare it to
mine was a 82 and had standard slide carbs, not CV, seamed easier to tune
with a few parts can be turned into a GPz, cams, jets and maybe forks
check out kzrider.com ask around over there
    can't go wrong either way

i love my 650 maxim but im going to change the bars for a more forward position and probably still buy a bigger bike for highway and longer trips, i'm thinking a new suzuki 1250 bandit or yamaha fz1 but i can't decide!
