Do you guys consider your 650 maxims a classic or just old bike?
Guy at my work said it is just an old bike, I paid $1k for mine and he said I paid $600 too much.

F**king experts! They always tell you you paid too much. It's worth what you wanted to pay for it.

Sounds like xj envy to me.I,ve had more guys comeing up to me this past summer telling me how they had a maxim years ago and just loved it.To me and them it,s a classic. And others say hey nice old bike but they never owned one.So i guess it,s in the eye of the beholder. But then again it,s mine and i'll say what it's worth

    It's over 25-years old.
    That makes it a Classic.

    It's a Inline, 4-Cyl, DOHC, 5-Speed, Shaft Drive - Yamaha.
    Classic!

I'm used to drawing a "I used to have one/know someone who had one of those" crowd with the Norton, but damndest thing---it happens with the Seca all the time. "Wow, nice Seca, I used to have a 750" And my favorite "nice bike, is it new?" Now that '76 Honda 400F you have listed, that was a TRUE classic in every sense. The XJs are no different in terms of their influence on motorcycles for years to come. Take a close look at a new Yamaha FZXRwhatever600 and you can see the XJ lineage peeking out from behind the plastic.

1K for a 650 in good shape is a decent price.

It is what you want to call it 1k for a running bike in decent shape isn't bad. I don't consider mine a classic just a nice bike. I have gotten many looks and compliments on my bike. I will def miss bike nights in the summer.

Well said trekrider! I couldn't have sait it more eloquently (or with more vulgarity) myself.

I once had a very nice and clean Honda 160 and the prick who ultimately became my brother in law (now ex-brother in law) and his POS Uncle gave me an un-mercifally bad time about the Honda. They rode a Hodaka 100B and Montessas.

My Honda was crap, their bikes were the only thing worth having.

I work in healthcare and consider myself more compassionate than most but I casually kept score over the years and reveled in every piece of misfortune that came their way.

    Arrogant and cruel bastards!

Hang onto it and keep it running if you can. If it's still alive in 2012, (and if we all dont evaporate into oblivion 8O ) it will achive "VINTAGE" status!! (30 years and older)

Here in NY 20 years is classic, 25 is antique.
I wonder if I can get a break on insureance?

    We've been over that.
Most comments about the XJ are positive, the negative are people who don't know.
Most of the time negative comments are about the size, you know " go big or stay home".

I think they are classics, and I challenge anybody (harley, new Honda, new yamaha whatever) to a red light race. The 'old worn out tiny little 650' will pull away from a new 1100 for fun. I love that look on their face when they catch up at the next light!

So next time some one tells you its 'just an old bike' don't take that crap!

I accidentally smoked some guy on an 1100 last summer running up Gratiot light-to-light, and at the next light he asked me "is that a 1000?" I smiled and pointed at the little "Seca 550" on the sidecovers. And then whumped him again. It's all power-to-weight ratio...

The way I look at it, every day I get to ride to work on a bike that is paid for, that is very cheap to insure, gets around 50 mpg, and I look pretty good riding it. More than anything, I think riding a motorcycle should be fun. trekrider, you bought a great bike that is paid for, and if you take care of it, it should be fun for a long time. I congratulate and commend you for making a very wise purchase!

trek, dont let um get you down. there are those chromeheads, plastic tupperware squids, and "the more money I spend the better my life is" guys.

now the go big or go home, lol they are chumps.
heres how I deal with it if they get on my nerves.
stop riding, place in neutral, grab my zipper and show them some "SIZE"

Those "size guys" are compensating for something, what it is only they know.
Only wimp, chump, butterball, wannabe, copycat, punks would compensate and ridicule you for not doing so.

I can ride a 50cc MINI-BIKE and those guys will never say a word again :D

I hate butt heads like that, but I seem to always get the upperhand.
My bike is paid off, and those butts are gettin laid-off. With bike payments to boot.

    /rant on bike snobs.

PS Edit: My bike gets ~40 mpg,
    goes up to ~120mph,
gets ~130miles to a tank and I can ride the WHOLE mileage comfortably, NO chain to replace,
can go 2up comfortably as well,
0-60 in the blink of an eye,
inexpensive tires(compared to sportbikes or cruisers)
and did i mention NO PAYMENTS
    NEED I SAY MORE!!!

Madone1 has it right. A couple years ago I pulled up to a red light along side a newer 600cc sport bike. I looked over and said "I bet your bike is faster". The other rider said " Yea, but I bet your bike is paid for". I chuckled and continued on my 400 mile journey. Take your 25+ year old bike, clean it up, tune it up and enjoy the compliments that you will get. A very good friend of mine, and the original owner of my Seca, now sell Harley-Davidsons for a living and he thinks that old Jap bikes are every bit as cool as the top of the line custom Harleys. These old bikes are very good machines and I'm proud to ride mine every chance I get. I may buy a newer bike some day soon, but the Seca will never leave or not be ridden.

Earlier this summer I pulled into a gas station. Some teenagers were just hanging out. One looks at my bike (83 XJ650 Maxim - full dresser w/ hard bags, trunk, fairing, lowers, etc....) and says, "Cool.....my dad has a goldwing just like that!" I said thanks, and snickered the rest of the way home.

Roflmao reminds me of the one time I took the seca racebike to Pomona drag strip for a day of street racing. I was supposed to race against a RZ350. He broke so up pulls a GSXR 750. I see him and tell myself "there goes the fun, he's gonna smoke by me but lets not give up the ghost yet" Now remember this bike is not in great condition, heck it would qualify for a ratbike but just barely. Anyways I go to stage and decide to mess with his head just a bit. I do a quick burnout and my usual stoppie while staging. Lights start to change.. at the second yellow goes off I take off and put my head down and start to rip through the gears. I stay in the tuck the whole way fully expecting to have the gixxer blast past me. We make it past the lights and I shut down. I knew that I had blew the pants off of that gixxer. As we are on the exit lane he comes by me staring hard at the bike.. All I can say while in my helmet was "yup this old bike just KICKED YOUR ASS!!!" Second best time was while I was at Brotherhood raceway on a Saturday afternoon. I had to work on my starts and was working on other things trying to see what worked and what didnt work for starts. I was pitted against an ninja 250...yeah I know easy money but again I was on a ratbike that looked like it just came from the mad max movies. I can hear them betting on the race on the PA. I hear the guy in charge Big Willie bet against me and he bet a rather hefty bet of 10 hotdogs against me. I look back at the tower and hold up 4 fingers meaning that I would give him a lead 4 seconds.. That blew there minds. Needless to say I won and Willie had a talking with me later that day on how much he lost on it.. I had so much fun there at Brotherhood raceway. It was only ten bucks to enter, didnt matter if you raced or watched or raced on skateboards. Willies goal was to get people off of the streets and bring it to the track for a cheap price. Too bad one suicide and the City of L.A decided that they needed the room for a port expansion.
