I'm not losing my mind - had the wife in the pace car going 30 MPH right next to me and that puts my speedo needle smack on 30 KPH! I thought 55MPH last night seemed a little faster than I remembered!!! :D

Anyhow - my Haynes is in the mail to me and searching the forum didn't seem to hold the key - can anyone shed some light on how this might be happening?

My guess is a 'close enough' speedo swap by one of the PO.

    My bike is a 82 XJ750K.

    Thanks again folks!

Is the tach/spedo setup on your 750K the same as the 750maxim? I'd go take a picture but I'd likely be struck by lightning at the moment.

I cropped this out of another pic of my 750maxim, gets the general idea across.

That looks identical to mine hessenr00ts - box lights and buttons.

My speedo has KPH on the inside in yellow to 120 and MPH in white on the outer ring to 80 - I think yours looks the same from the pic.

Sounds like it. Mines to 120 kph / 80 mph as well.

I've had no problems with mine at all, works great, can't give any sold advice on your problem. Computer chip inside fried maybe? I'm sure someone with a little more experience on the matter can help a bit more. (i've got the assembly and wiring schematics if you'd like me to post them)

I'm replacing that (garish) gague box with some sexy little chrome pods within the next two weeks. If the cause of your problem is something terminal and you'd like first dibs on the one I take from my bike I'd be more then happy to help. Cost of shipping plus a few dollars perhaps?

I'm sure you can find something locally that will work for you but I wanted to throw the offer out there :D

Thanks for the offer - consider me the first possible buyer once you get the pods settled. Of course I'll need pictures of the pods and where/$$$ you got them.

Maybe I'll follow a similar route..?

Seriously - send me a PM when you are looking to sell the box and we can talk price and shipping - Thanks!

not entirly sure what the problem is, but the I would suspect that the problem is in the spedo drive unit, unless your spedo gauge is sticking

The pods i've fallen in love with (I ordered the spedo yesterday, expecting it late this week).

I imagine I'm going to have to get a little creative with the wiring but by the looks of the schematic it shouldn't be too difficult.

    Tach - http://tinyurl.com/qsc6t

I don't know what your handlebars are like, but if they're anything like the 705max bars, I doubt these will fit. I'm putting on some 27" drag bars to remedy that 8)

I'll be sure to let you know when the box goes up for sale, assuming you don't have something new and shiny before then

    Wow those are sharp!

I guess I know what I want for Christmas this year :D !

Please post pics/etc when you do the swap.

Also - how hard was/is/will be changing your bars - I see you have the same square tube handles that I have.

    Thanks again hessenr00ts!

Aren't those bars just ackward?! Comfortable enough of a ride but every single place I've shopped for parts looks at me like I'm crazy when I describe to them how the bars are mounted.

Here's the untold secret of the 750 handlebar mounts:

Looking at the bars fully assembled it appears that the whole thing goes into one bolt. Yet, nearly every handlebar riser you find on the web for Yamaha's has TWO mounting bolts.

Taking apart the whole shebang and removing the metal trim plate (14 in the pic) reveal that it does go into two, identically sized bolts. I was going to go out and measure said bolts this morning but due to inclimate weather I'll be waiting until tomorrow.

Once I know for certain what size those bolts are, I'll be ordering risers and getting my news bars rigged up :D Pics sure to follow.

JPXJ , SPEEDO ,one would have to go through the system , relube drive on front wheel , lube and check cable , and remove speedo out of housing [easy] and lube the bearings in there , doing all that might fix it.

be gentle with the speedo gauge itself....

    UPDATE:

Well I pulled the cable and forced WD-40 then white lithium grease through the line after pulling the spring and checking for kinks. Everything looked fine but putting the cable back resulted in the same low reading (that seems to display MPH on the KPH band.) I'll take the speedo itself out this week and try lubing it up. Does anyone have a suggestion on what to clean/lube the speedo bearings with?

    Thanks again,

    Jim

You should avoid greases unless they are specifically formulated for speedometers. I have cleaned aircraft instruments with technical grade alcohol and trichloroethelane (but that stuff is no longer cool so you don't have too many options anymore) coupled with a very special grease made for the instruments. I would use graphite since it doesn't attract or hold any dust that may eventually float in there, but the down side to graphite is that it too will turn to dust and spread around in the housing and I'm not sure you would want that. I guess I really can't offer a solution to you but I suppose I'm telling you what NOT to use. Best of luck to you!

I know someone that used laquer thinner to clean some gunk out of a tach and speedo for a late 70's Harely...worked for him but I'd think it a little too caustic for my liking.

I phoned up my father (30+ years mechanic experience under his belt) and he said using a spray can of carb cleaner makes a good cleaner for small, water sensitive areas like this.

    Hope that helps a little.
