I was thinking about doing some suspension like this and I was curious if this would work alright. The only problem I can really see is finding a spot for the battery and the electronics but here are some pics of what I was thinking about. Helpful comments are welcome.

This could be a real safety issue without redesigning the swingarm to handle the additional stress

Measure the distance from the swingarm pivot to the lower shock mount.
If you cut that distance in half, you need to double your spring.
Cut it in 1/4 and you need 4 X the spring.

Then the shocks don't dampen enough due to the small travel.
You'd need the monoshock from a big bike, and stiffen the swingarm to take the load, or install the back half of a chain drive cruiser from a junkyard. Your welds would be under the motor and under the tank.

This is an excellent point that can't be stressed too much. Normally the shocks carry the weight of the bike and the swingarm just keeps the wheel in the correct position.

In addition to the swing arm you might also have to beef up the frame in the swing arm pivot area.

you are going to need some very very stiff springs to hold things up that close to the fulcrum / front pivot. A pushrod pivot point ould be ideal here take a look at the VFR800's setup that might give you an idea of what you could work with.

i think it looks badass, and has the potential to ride much nicer pending the shock valving/spring rate you use is correct for the geometry.

this is where you may want to look closely at MX bikes. things like swapping out the swingarm bolt with a stronger one, and gusseting the frame around the shock mounts as well as the swingarm for the different stress you will pe butting on it may be things to consider.

this will not improve the bike at all, you can't use those springs, you need a big diameter coil, best to pick up a frame with these features & mount your lump in it.

Hardtails LOOK cool but can be a TAD uncomfortable to go any real distance on...

Every bike has the potential to ride much nicer with the correct shock valving/spring rate but how many people actually bother with it

before you start chopping check out other bikes forum there is a 1983 gr650 project that has a factory rear like you want don't know if it will help but it's always more satisfing to built what you want rather than what you know how! just a thought
