what do you guys think about buying used tires?
specifically i'm looking at a set on craigslist http://eugene.craigslist.org/mcy/949252953.html
i've got a somewhat good metzler on the back now but it has a screw in it.
i'm afraid to take it out because i don't want it to leak instantly and not get me the one mile i ride to work everyday. and i need a front bad.
also i'm planning some very far touring this spring. should i just hold out and get new dunlops in a couple months?

After you buy the used tires,I have a bulk quantity of used condoms I'd be willing to let go on the cheap...which is to say to hold out for some new skins! Browse Cycle World,or similar magazines, for store adds. Dennis Kirk will beat any current listing for an identical tire by a buck. You can plan on coughing up a bit for excise tax,but overall still much more economical than buying from a dealer. Harley Davidson wanted $186 for a 130/90/16 Dunlop D402 for my Sportster, and the Dennis Kirk price was less than $70 dollars delivered. I think there is even free shipping on orders over $100. New treads will provide a little more peace of mind on the longer jaunts you have planned.

Hold out for a nice new set of D404's. The seller said HE "bought them as spares" I suspect also used, and on the rims. You have no way of knowing how old they really are.

I've bought used race tires for my MINI but would never consider used tires for my bike. On the track it's a controlled environment and there are emergency services right there waiting, so if i get a bad tire and it fails, I'm still fairly safe. On a bike, we're at enough disadvantages in regards to safety on the street as it is. It's just not worth it the risk. On a car, if one of your four tires catastrophically fails, you still have a pretty good chance of safely stopping the car. On a bike, if one of your two tires fail at speed, you're probably going to go down. You'd be better off buying one of the cheap Chinese tires like Cheng Shin new than a name brand used tire of unknown condition.
