Just wondering if I could jump start my 83' Maxim 650 from a car battery? I just don't want to fry anything. I'm rebuilding it and I want maximum power to start it up. The battery I have is ok but not 100% right now.
    Thanks, Boomer

Your car battery has about 10 times the amperage of the MC battery. Be carefull you don't crank your starter too long. Check it by putting your hand on it to make sure its not overheating. Good Luck

PS make sure you have all of your fuses in place any shorts with out them your wires will be like a fuse on a fire cracker

Don't see why not... I did my 750 without incident. One clamp to the positive, and the other to the frame somewhere.

A car battery is fine, but DO NOT attempt to start the bike from a running car. It will burn up your voltage regulator in seconds.

DO IT. the bike will only use as much amperage as it needs, so you can jump it off of a big rig with 4 starting batteries, no worries.

    Ditto!

Gotta hook it up correctly first time though. Switch polarity and things will cook.

Is it true that if you put the negative jumper cable clamp as close to the bikes starter motor as possible it will make it crank harder?

Would be true if you had grounding problems. With a good condition electrical system it should make no difference.

+1 to that. if all is up to par, there should be no difference.

You can Jump Start the Bike from a Car.
    Yes, you can.
Just be sure that you have the Keys to the Car in your pocket before you hook-up the Jumper Cables.

    Here's why.

Back in the Late 80's, when our Bikes were new; Automotive Charging Systems weren't much above the Amperage needed to just keep the Battery charged.
    Times have changed ...

There's enough Amps in the Battery of a Late Model anything to require Extreme Caution making the Battery to Battery connection.
With the Vehicle running ... the Amperage can approach figures above 20 or 30 Amps.

Take every precaution to avoid "Hitting" you Bike with a Heavy-Amp Output.
The Voltage Regulator and Solid States are at risk EVERY Time you use Jumper Cables.

99 out of 100 Times ... Nothing bad happens.

I'm telling you to look-out for that one time ... when you might get distracted ... and hook-up the Cables wrong or have somebody rev-up an Engine with Cables attached to your Bike.
