"officially" beginning in 1984, when the 550 became a 600 there appeared two bumps on the clutch cover because there had been two screw bosses added inside. These are the attachment points of an "oil guide plate" (reference #22 in the pic) which although obviously named begs the question: WHY?
Can anyone shed any light on why the oil suddenly needed guiding, or was this a planned change that just didn't get implemented during the 1982 production of the '83 bikes?
Is it there to keep oil that's flinging off the clutch from being flung into the breather cavities cast into the cover? Or does it serve to "shear" the oil off the outside of the clutch and hasten its return to the sump? How close is it to the outside of the drum? That might provide a clue...
In other words, any ideas why it's there and what improvement (if any) did it bring to the breed or what problem did it fix? The screw bosses are on NOS replacement covers carrying the same part number for all the 550's, plus some of the XJ and FJ600's, but the plate only appears on the 600's. Ideas?

on the yamaha YZ250f the clutch cover has a internal chanel that is designed to guide oil to the clutch plates in a specific spot. maybe the same idea? Will the 600 clutch cover fit the 550? If so it might be a good preventative swap.

The cover in question includes the Yamaha pn for all the 550's and some 600's yes. That's the reason I asked the question, to try to determine if and/or what the benefits might actually be of retrofitting that feature to the 550.

I think I figured out the purpose of the "oil guide" plate. I bought a clutch cover from an '89 Radian (same, except it's black) off eBay and it came with the plate.
The plate DIRECTLY corresponds to the area in the cover where the internal vanes are cut away to provide passage to the crankcase vent "maze" cast into the cover an the rear of the clutch housing. It looks like it's there to prevent the clutch from agressively flinging oil into the breather passage "intake" area. I'll bet you that they had a problem (or perceived an impending problem) with excessive oil in the breather output at high rpms once the bike became a 600 with the resultant increase in crankcase pressure.
I run the SNOT out of my '81 550 with great regularity and have never noticed excessive "airbox oiling" or anything. I'm probably going to use this cover on the '83, at least for evaluation, but I don't know how I'd tell if it made a difference if there was no issue to begin with.
Anyway, mystery (apparently) solved and fellow 550 owners, don't rush out and retrofit your bikes. If I install the cover and suddenly gain 5HP I'll let you know but 'taint happenin'.
