I'm new and learning...I have my permit. Bike is insured but not tagged (that's tomorrow). Got my helmet, padded jacket, gloves and boots. I've got my 750 running fairly well...and the temptation to ride is really powerful even thought I haven't dotted all of my "i"s and crossed all my "t"'s.

I started off just practicing throttle and clutch control...then those slow speed turns where you shift your weight instead of leaning...then I started getting interested in speed and acceleration. After dinner I snuck out of the house and tooled over to a straight empty road just out of the neighborhood and gave it the WOT in 1st and 2nd gear, almost to the red line. I know, I know...not very responsible of me. It's 32F here in Maryland and that burst is enough to turn you into an icicle.

Biking is like strapping yourself on to a car engine and racing it. Scary! And our bikes are OLD! These '00-'09 rice rocket guys are crazy. I don't know how they do it. The bike is a blast though...Spring is going to be awesome. I'll have the bike cleaned up by then.

It's funny how we all start on the carbs and performance and then on that first trial run through the gears ponder what shape the brakes are in. If that wasn't on your to-do list it probably now.

Don't worry Captain, I checked them out weeks ago before the bike was running. A fluid flush and exercising the calipers with a C-clamp, and all is well.

Good comment though. :) Yeah...it's addicting.

danger is the spice of life!

my dad decided to try and fix the sticking throttle on our sled before the zero-brake issue. a few cracked ribs later the sled was smashed into the side of the house, and he "fixed" it forever. the upside is he is still alive, the house won, and we had more room in the garage

sushi- welcome to the forum. ton of good info here.

You're right. These old scooters are an absolute hoot! When I first got my 650 Maxim my neighbor came over and was looking at my bike and reminiscing about the one he had bought new and ridden 2 up across the country 3 times.

I thought the guy was nuts! Cross country on a 650???? Then I rode mine for the first time. Nuff said!

Sushi; Take a look in this thread: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=1 ... bunny.html
LOTS of good material in there, but look on page 4, at the postings by Hurst01, particularly on the subjects of countersteering and stopping in a corner. Ed is a former (current?) MSF instructor and gave us a few REALLY GOOD essays on riding technique.
