I began having an issue yesterday with my engine stalling/bogging down when coming to a stop or decreasing my speed drastically.
The engine died at a stop light, and when I tried to crank her, the battery acted dead. Once I got the bike back to the house, I hooked it up to my truck and the engine would run fine until the cables were taken off.

My question is, will a dead or dying battery cause the engine to act up similarly?

yes the bike runs off the battery at idle. Generator kicks in around 2k rpm give or take a bit...

Here is my favorite battery info

    http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-35.htm

    Motorcycle batteries are lead-acid.

Your battery has a life of 3-4 years (or some more if lucky)
You can shorten that life by

    1. deep discharge
    2. letting the self-discharge deep discharge the battery
    3. Over charging (over volting) the battery

Thanks for the quick reply. I hate to buy a new battery but at least I get to keep my hands clean.

Stevo, you should also look at your alternator brushes as well as test the alternator output. Out of spec in either of these conditions will cause this problem as well.

If you're unsure about the battery you could always take it to the parts store and have it checked.

As Robert already mentioned ... you have the classic symptoms of Alternator Brushes needing to be replaced.
