I took apart the starter button for my 82 Maxin 650, and cleaned up the extremely corroded connections. Now I have a problem. I was in such a hurry to get the thing apart and clean it that I didnt bother taking a good look at it so I could put it back together. I have it together for the most part, but I'm not seeing where a couple of parts fit in there.

If someone has a pic of the inside of one, or would be willing to take it off the handle bars and taking a pic of the inside (asking a lot, I know :?) I would be extremely greatful.

    Thanks,

    Shawn

I have to work tonight or I'd pull it apart and get you a pic.
but I do have time to point out that a valuable lesson is to be learned here.
Before you pull stuff apart go grab that digital camera or your picture phone and photo the item.
That camera and /or photo phone could save you a lot of time.
Sorry I can't send you a pic today
    Mike

I'm in the same boat...stuck at work for another 6 1/2 hours or I'd have some pics for you as well.

The schematic should be out there on the web somewhere. Good luck !

    Never did find the schematic...

If someone could post a pic of the inside I'd appreciate it big time.

In our Links directory http://xjbikes.com/Web_Links/l_op=viewlink/cid=10.html there is a link to 'Yamaha Online Part Numbers'. They do have pictures and part numbers for our bikes. I looked it up but couldn’t find what you needed. Maybe you’ll have better luck.

Help us help you with some pics of the beast dissasembled and what pieces you can't find homes for...

The workshop manual I have doesn't have any diagrams :(

I'd take mine apart just for the experience of doing it but I've got to leave for work in a while...

The mystery peice is the cable clamp. It fits over the area on the left(pic5) so the flat vertical part sits flush with the housing.

Screws into the bottom left hole of pic5.

Man that's clean in there. I can take a pic of my fully assembled one but the dirt in there is shameful compared to yours. What did you use to get it so clean?

    HHHHmmmmmmmmmmmm,

Does it work without that piece in place...?? :p

Looks like a contact of some sort, or just a piece that you screw on to hold down some wires. Wish I could give you a little more then that.

Hopefully someone here can give you a little guidance. I'm putting my new bars on tomorrow, perhaps I'll open my starter up and take a peek.

I'll see if I cant get that back in there then.

Actually, I hadn't tried it untill just now, and grounding the black wire, with the blue wire soldered in place works when I push the button. now all I need is some more solder :-(

actually, that was already that clean, all I ended up doing was sanding off some corosion from the contacts. It looks like it was cleaned not too long ago (before I got the bike)

Being as the switch works, I'm going with some sort of cover plate...

    just my 2 cents.

With HiredBaboon, oops, I meant Goon on this one Hess. It is the wiring harness clamp and secures in exactly the position he mentioned. I'm messing with you HG, hope it is ok. Let me know if it isn't (though you don't strike me as a fellow who would mind).

It's all good Gramps, I like a bit of humour myself and a bit of harmless ribbing never hurt anyone. 8)

Just remember what goes around comes around.

Kane, when you put that clamp back on, make sure you push the wires into the housing a bit (few mm) so there is no strain on the connections.

Yup Hess, and to answer your other question, it will work without it for a little while. It's main function is to hold the wires firm otherwise the movement from turning the handlebars will move the wires and eventually break the soldered connections.

Isn't it always the simple things that create the most brain strain.

Indeed it is. Could have become another "XJ Gremlin" :p

just by the look of the piece, the size of the housing and the function of the part it really didn't look like anything "intergral" to the electrical system.

My limited experience intuition at work :D

That part fit perfectly, and does indeed hold the wires in place.

Thanks for the help, you guys rock!
