well i got a little progress made today on the ol XJ. first of all, big thanks to bigfitz for the step by step valve adjustment guide that is now sitting on my workbench after I printed it out. i got the cover off and the gasket looks damn near perfect. someone must have checked the valves within the past few years before i got the bike. didnt realize how small of a space it actually is to be working in under that cover. i didnt check any of the clearances today, mostly because i got hungry and had to go grab some beer and get some things ready for something ive got going on tonight. one problem i have so far is that one of the cover bolts will not screw back in to the motor. all the other bolts go back in, something must have happened to the threads inside when i was taking them out. thoughts, ideas and things like that would be appreciated as always.

You may be able to clean up the threads with a tap. If they are shot you can get a Helicoil and put it in. Works fine - I had to do one of mine.
