I know they're completely unrelated, but after getting the FJ600 running the other day (and running GREAT, btw), we noticed the speedometer has quit.
It's a mechanical speedo. I unhooked the cable up top, tilted the bike back on the centerstand and had someone spin the front wheel. I could see the cable turn. Shot a little white lithium grease down the cable and just a smidge into the recepticle on the speedo (I'm leery of gumming it up in there). Still nada.
I didn't think to check the odometer to see if it still functions.
Is there maybe something simple I'm overlooking? As far as we know, it was working fine a couple of months ago when the bike was parked for the Winter. Is there ANYTHING a hobby-ist type mechanic (read: ME!) can do in the home garage to repair the speedo?
I've been looking on ebay and haven't seen any gauges. Plus, the bike is VERY original and I'd like to keep it that way.
Does anyone out there repair these things?

Some days it's better to be lucky than good. The FJ600 gauge cluster comes apart, much like the 550 Seca. If the speedo is truly FUBAR a new one can be installed with a minimum of fuss.

My current "photo-project" is a de-mystification of the typical Yamaha mechanical speedo, I may have it done this weekend.

    Ronnie, you have a PM.

Bigfitz52, be sure to put a link or pics here....I'd love to be able to fix what she has; keep the odometer reading correct and all....

Hey Fitz, if you include the tachometer that would be great. My tach does not work below 32 deg F but works fine when its warm.

It's POSSIBLE to actually swap odometers between speedos, but I don't know how LEGAL it would be for me to show that (directly.) Unless the main bearing has failed, most speedo and tach problems are a matter of gummy lubricants.

Sure, I can include the (mechanical) tach, it works the same as a speedo but it's much simpler.

I got ahold of an electonic tach, and I must say I'm amazed. Stay tuned...

Hey Ronnie, I tried to email you and it bounced back. PM me or email about the gauges, please: uberkafer@hotmail

Bigfitz, please keep us updated about the speedo repair. You can also email me if there's something I can try at home while I wait on the pics/update.

    Thanks all!

I did notice today that both odometers still work; the mileage and the trip odometer.
What does that tell me about the speedo needle? Maybe it's just gummed up inside?

Even though it is mechanical there is a lead that goes in the back.
It is molded into a flat plastic piece that comes out.
I always thought this was the power for the magnet.?
If the odometer still works, which is all mechanical, this maybe a place to start.

Speedo and mechanical tach "demystification" teardown with pics is posted in "FAQ Suggestions" forum.

The leads that go into the plastic bar on the back are to the reedswitch that provides the turn signal canceller with its speed/distance info.

Speedometer itself is mechanical as are both odometers.

Tachometer on an FJ600 is "electronic" (electro-mechanical is more like it) I have one I'm playing around with it's fascinating.

I don't see anything but the mechanical cable coming out of the tach on her FJ. Maybe there's something snuck in thrhough the instrument panel, but I don't see any wires on the back.
I guess there'd have to be wires snuck in there for the lights, at least.

It could be a mechanical tach then too, I was going by parts fiche and guesstimate. My instrument teardown post should do you some good: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15303.html The photos will show you exactly how they (tach and speedo) are put together.
