crash bars and highway pegs

    ok so i really want some forward pegs to stretch out on long rides but i like the "fetal" position of the factory pegs for in town. i'm looking for a quick simple way to put on some highway pegs. the easiest would probably be to mount some crash bars and put pegs on them, but i'm not sure where they would mount. is there a way to put one straight pipe straight through one side to the other and clamp it to the frame? there doesn't seem to be much room in there. if someone could post some pics of there crash bars and where they pass through the exhaust and frame that would help a lot.

    While some crash bars mount as you describe many are 2 piece and mount using the engine mounting bolts.

    If you look in my gallery you will see another option which is a simple mount for the pegs. I have removed them and sold them in favor of crash bar and pegs but I don't have pics of that setup yet.

    I simply MUST know where you got those foot pegs (the ones still in your gallery)!
    Did you buy them or did you make them?
    Do you have any more or know where i can get them?

    That is EXACTLY the set up i want for my bike!

    Well I hate to disappoint but they were put on by the PO. They were very nice but I like the crash bar look.

    Now I can help a bit - in the for sale section under my name I posted pics and approximate dimensions if you want to try fabricating.

    The bars are these...I think. I was actually going to ask about these in a bit, once my bike is back together, but it's good to know someone has used them. I take it they worked out ok bill? what was reason to go to the crash bars and pegs? Thanks for any answers (dang newbies).

    with only one mounting bolt... do they rest on the exhaust? how do they not rotate?

    I made these at work on a slow night. I used 308 Stainless and used foot rests from an old set of Drag Specialities highway pegs. The old pegs mounted to the frame, but were way too high up for my tastes (read that as this old bastard cramped up in the hips!)

    I made the flat piece first, then I used an end mill on an old bridgeport mill press to fit the foot rests. turned out fairly nice. One thing I am gonna do is redrill the top bolt hole larger and flip them around. Theyare still a bit too high.

    Never had any trouble with them at all. They never moved. I switched for 3 reasons. I like the look of the small crash bars and it gets the pegs a bit wider out on the bike. The ones I had were fine but a bit close for my liking. Lastly while I have never had to take a bike down (knock on wood) I have witnessed buddies doing so and I want protect the engine. I think this style will provide some protection but could bend on impact.

    Now Alkasmeltzer's rig would provide better protection. Looks good too.

    I found my crash bars on eBay for about 40 or 50 bucks, and paid about 20 over at JC Whitney for a set of pegs. They mount very easily to the motor mounts (although you'll probably need longer bolts (8mm x 1.25 if I recall correctly) & lock washers - and be really really careful not to over torque). I think it took me about 20 minutes to do everything, and makes for a much more comfortable ride.

    What storm said. Longer bolts are required and without a doubt, use lock washers.

    I am in the tan jacket.

    (about) 1" square tube between the front of the engine and the frame, below the lip of the engine, clamped to the frame.

    The "pegs" are small enough to slide into the bar, but are actually hinged. They fold backwards and up, at about a 20deg angle. They also act as a crash bar of sorts (could damage frame).

    They work, but are not ideal. They place your feet too high. They work great to change up the ride position.

    well i'm going with what alkasmeltzer did. accept everything has to be bolted because i don't have access to a welder and the bars will just stick out far enough to be the pegs instead of having pegs at the ends of them. i'll post pics when i'm done. thanks for the help guys

    One thought before you fabricate. The folding can be nice since the bike gets a bit wide with highway pegs. I slip my bike behind my truck to park it next to it and have to be very careful. May not be an issue for you.
