Hello people, after reading the execllent write up in the "How To" section about the valve adjustment on the air-head xj engines, I was wonding if anybody has or is able to do a section similar to that for the maxim X genesis engine. I know a "How to" write up would be very beneficial for all who are fortunate to have a maxim x. I currently have a maxim x torn down for a re-build and would love to have some guidance/tips for a valve adjustment. Anyways just throwing it out there.
Also I would like to know if there is any method of checking the coils for the same bike (or any other bike for that matter). How can I tell if they are putting out what they should or how to tell if I need new coils. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks in advance.
    Mike

You, sir, sound like you need to gets your hands on an XJCD. They have a valve adjustment procedure in there, with pictures (although not high resolution), for model specific engines. The XJCD manual also has specs for testing the ignition coil and what ohm reading you should get from it, however, I can tell you from experience that your ignition coil casing is more than likely cracked, which becomes very evident when you start having problems with keeping the engine running well in wet weather.

If you're doing a re-build of the bike you should definitely put some thought into replacing the coils with some Dyna DC1-1. When I finally got around to upgrading mine I was shocked to see the state of my original coils. The casings were badly cracked and nowhere near weatherproof. Now I can actually ride my X in the rain and it even starts the next day!

Also... I have a short write-up on valve-shimming that someone sent me a while back. I can send it along to you in a word.doc if you give me an email address.

If you are redoing your bike from the ground up and the engine is to come out, the valve adjustment becomes very bearable when the engine is on the floor. It isn't fun to do with it in the bike, not at all. WAY too much in the way. I redid mine last winter when the engine was out.

The engine will be comming out of the bike, so I guess it would no better time to do the valves. Thanks for the info.
