Driving to work the other day I was crossing into Oregon where the speed limit drops so I look down to check my speed and the speedometer is not working.

Pulled the cable off and checked both ends. Both ends look like new with no wear or signs of breakage. Cable spins in the housing just fine. Put it back together and still doesn't work. Read a bunch of posts about speedo issues and will check a couple of things.

Could it be my gear in the front wheel? Or something in the display unit?

The ferrule at the top of the cable housing is messed up a bit and binds the connecting cap a bit. Seems like I'm able to get it screwed on far enough to engage the cable. Could this be part of the problem?

My manual doesn't really troubleshoot speedo issues, just how to remove/replace and lube.
Hoping to get some help here. Thanks in advance.
I will check in later as it's time for bed (working nights).

Put the bike on the centerstand and elevate the front wheel. Disconnect the cable from the speedo. Spin the front wheel (forward) and be sure the cable is spinning. If so, your cable and drive are ok, problem up top. If not and the cable is fine, then it could be the drive gear box.

Just an update, I did the above mentioned troubleshoot and found the cable wasn't turning. Pulled the front tire off and checked out the speedometer drive unit. Turns out the tabs on the metal washer thingy that turns the unit had gotten bent down enough that they weren't engaging the drive unit. Straightened out the tabs and ensured that the unit was working before putting it back on the tire.

I also came to realize that reinstalling the unit and the tire requires keeping the unit tight against the wheel hub while getting the tire into place. If the unit moves away just a little and gets turned, the tabs may not be engaged and then they get pushed down when the axle is tightened up. Not sure how many have experienced this but just a little forewarning for those not familiar with this particular dilemma.
