I'm ready to pull the trigger on a new set of tires.
It's come down to Motorcycle superstore and Chaparall. Thanks Ass.faut for the heads up on Chaparall.
There a couple dollars difference in price.
I've spent hours on the internet and searched this site looking for low prices.
Anyone have suggestions on were to buy tires at a discount, before I buy?
    Thanks

I've had Dinlop D404's on my XJ for 4 years now. I can't complain about them.

I went to one and added my size tires to the cart. Then went to the other site and started to do the same thing and when I added the 1st tire the cart popped up with 3 tires in it. The one I had just added and two from the site before.

Another vote for Dunlop 404s here.
Just bought a front one for my steed.
Hard to beat, for an inexpensive tire.
    Two thumbs up.

I have D404's on my '81 and they're great. That being said, I'm going to put Avons on the '83 for the spring.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Shinko's. My tires are weather cracked, and I was not looking forward to shelling out a couple hundred for Metzler's which is where I was leaning. Picked up a pair of Shinko's for my X for just north of $80 after the AMA discount. What a deal!

So I did it Motorcycle Super store won out.
I feel it's a good price especially if you compare it to other sellers at $100+ a tire.
I like the idea of a dual compound tire and I read nothing but rave reviews of this tire.
New head bearings and these tires, it will feel like a new bike.

If you haven't changed the wheel bearings lately, swap those out too while the wheels are off. Wouldn't want dry bearings getting in the way of your "new bike" feel.

Yes, front and rear bearings are going on.
I'm making a list, I would really like Braided brake lines but they may have to wait for more cash.
Bike stops fine now, just knowing it could be better keeps you wrenching.

    Hhmmm.
This is what you're looking at, right?
I'm not at all sure about them, definetly not DOT certified.
Are the banjos the right size?
The price is right though, hhhmmmm....

I went with Pirellis, and they are good tires. 200 bucks mounted and balanced with disposal. I still over ride them a bit. Of course I don't think the folks at Yamaha thought the X would be ridden like an Honda F4.

So my front tire's going to need to be replaced this year - is it kosher to replace that and leave the rear, or should I replace them both?

Depends on the shape of the rear tire. If it's in good shape, leave it.
