I think I'd try an RTV silicone gasket maker first. You don't have much to lose. I can't see there being much oil pressure at the leak site.

the problem is where the tach cable enters the engine

I had a pretty bad leak from the tach pickup area too. I took it apart and the gasket was smashed flat from 29 years of use. I was able to find an o-ring from work to fit it, and it's tight as ever now. Should be the same fix.

Ok. I'm with Flash and Alaska on this now. My tach drive was leaking too and I replaced the o-ring and seal in the drive unit. Your leak seems to be a symptom of an o-ring leak. For the price of it and the little work involved, I'd replace the o-ring and the seal in the drive unit.

The oils is probably NOT dripping from the cable itself, it is "traveling" from the source, which is undoubtedly the o-ring (#4) as mentioned above.

It COULD be seal #2 as well, but I vote for the o-ring.

The number at the top of the diagram is the PN for #4. They are still available from Yamaha, but I'll bet chacal carries them too.

Fitz. Isn't #4 the seal? Pretty sure that #2 is the o-ring. I still say replace them both. $10.00 max.

Oh weird, i didn't even realize that part #5 came out of part #3, I didn't even know there was a seal in there! I'll have to change it now.

And wait till you try to tighten #5 down.
It's so wide, I don't have a screwdriver to fit it.
I ended up using two license plates back to back in the slot.
Gotta' do, what ya gotta do.

I had a chunk of square tubing laying around that fit it nicely.

A stiff putty knife would work.

The Haynes shows a neat trick to make a tool for this. Take a washer of appropriate diameter and cut it in half. Sandwich the halves together and grasp the apex with a pair of pliers, viola! A broad blade that will reach.

I would say that is a safe bet on the seal. Oring looks okay but you have it apart so why not replace it to the there is no second guessing.

If that's all that's left of the seal (#4 in the diagram) I'd say you've found the problem. I agree fit a new o-ring too as insurance.

That's all that was left of the seal?

Does anyone have a picture of what that inner seal looks like when it's fresh? I was going to see if we have anything on helicopter bench-stock that's similar.
