I call it "THE MANTIS" (now also known as the "BAT BIKE" :D

I will post up more pics of the re-build and stuff later, but here's some as she sits right now.

She still needs new rear blinkers and some r6 mirrors but you get the idea.

Also if anyone is handy with engine related issues please follow the link :D

Gives her a real contemporary look.

    Its a 2007-08 yamaha r6 fairing.

Yeah there was a fair bit of fabricating involved as the r/h side of the fairing was smashed to pieces! both headlights where not attached to each other! and no screen... But for $30 who cares :)

I just made up lots of brackets out of aluminium to hold the headlights together again, repaired the broken fairing with sheet steel and bog, and lots of brackets out of 3mm steal to bolt it to the bike.

I also wired up the headlights so they work like on the r6 so the right one only for low beam and both left and right for high. Which is not as easy as it sounds :)

Oh and the little Yamaha park light in the centre is a highlight! especially with a blue led in it! its like another headlight

Oh thanks for the kind words also, people who don't know bikes to well ask what model it is as they have never seen one and don't believe me when i say its a 1983 :)

She gets her fair share of looks cruising the streets to, sounds real good with the R1 muffler.

Edit: not that it has cruise the streets much... see link ^^^

Looks great in black ! I would get small, black rear signals, bob the rear fender a bit, and shorten the muffler 6" ( 150 MM )
I've been needing close-up pics of the belly pan, I want to build one.

"sheet steel and bog" What is bog? Glue?

Oh sorry its Aussie slang for the putty filler stuff. Like what spray painters use to fill dents in your car (or tank) before they paint it.
Actually everybody here calls it bog or nickie so much i can't remember what the real name is!

Question for you now :) what is "bob" the rear tail?

I can get you close up pics of the belly pan later if you like? (its 5am)There as rare as hens teeth (more Aussie slang) here, i was lucky to get one. I was actually thinking of making a mold out of fiberglass, making them, and selling them on ebay. I should make another thread requesting interest and if there's enough start selling them on here and on ebay.

And new "signals" will be on as soon as funds permit. I mentioned it up the top of the first post, its funny cause we call them blinkers :)

Oh another question for you, would it be hard to shorten the muffler? i wouldn't want to stuff it up.

Here's a shot of my 900 with the US rear fender. Bob is to trim, like a Bobcat has a very short tail. I also have aftermarket blinkers. My 4 into 1 has the smallest aluminium muffler I've seen, and I have yet to ID it.

I also had thought of making a mold of my finished belly pan and offering them for sale. . .
Another XJ-er took a muffler like yours and shortened it. It didn't sound hard to do.
So "bog" is Bondo? body filler.

    Ive got the same muffler!!!!

I took it off as im trying to hunt an engine problem (wanted more back pressure) and put the R1 muffler on. i have no idea on what type or brand of muffler it is either, all it has on it is a date (29/06/89). Ill do a forum search to try and find the thread on shortening the R1 muffler.

Nice XJ by the way :) it looks super clean and straight!

I might try and get another rear tail and give "bobbing" a go, just it case i don't like it i can put it back to normal. My only worry would be exposing more of that skinny rear tyre!

    Thanks mate :)

Im not sure if there is a minimum lenght, i would say no considering the height of the back of some of the bikes these days.

Very nice 8) looking beastie there. Must be nice to have such good lighting for night riding, and something decent to keep the wind off.

Yeah mate that's for sure, i have never had such good lighting on a bike before its no less than fantastic. The screen could be a little higher as I'm quite tall but i can duck under it when the mood arises and it works really well.

Lose those pod filters, they just make it look tacky. What's with that big muffler? Looks like a glass-pack from a car. You need something smaller, more sleek looking that would fit with the rest of the bike. I'm just saying if you want your bike to look like it's fast, it should look more stream lined in my opinion.

Yeah the pod filters aren't the best and are only still on there due to lack of funds, i will still be replacing them with pods, probably some little k&n's or some nice chrome jobbies.

The muffler is a bit big, ok allot big :) but she is a titanium R1 muffler which has a excellent note to it. Its nice and lumpy at idle, quite when cruising but lets everyone know when she is on full throttle. I'm doing research into the inner construction and as long as I can, i will be cutting it down to make it a little shorter.

But i don't want her to look to fast :)

I see. Ya, I'm not much for those big "canister" mufflers when going with an after market system. It seems like that's all that's out there in most cases. But I guess if it sounds good, looks aren't everything.

Ive got a small aluminium muffler like Timetoride has (see page one) that i did have on it, but due to fuel issues i put the R1 on to give a little more back pressure and just feel in love with the sound, the little one was SO LOUD :)

I had a pair of those shorty mufflers on my XJ last year and they were loud. I swapped them for a pair of stock Harley mufflers last winter and it sounds so much better now. It's hard to get the just-right sound with a low growl at idle and a sweet rumble at speed. I went thru four sets of mufflers before finding that sound. A little tweeking makes all the difference.

if you want to shorten the muffler, look for a web site www.gixxer.com and do a search for shortening muffler, it is there in full detail,
Deffinitly loose the large blinkers and cut the tail

Backwards? do you mean the shifter lever being in front of the shaft? but yeah its the same on all of the 900's and what is really good is the shaft that goes between the two ball joints is infinitely adjustable. So you can have the gear shifter in the exact position you want it.

Update: engine is now 100% and going great, still have a handling issue though

Rear tail section is gone and a new wider rear tyre has been fitted. Blinkers and new pods are still on there way.

New photos will be uploaded in the next week or so.
