Hi guys, my name is Josh. I joined this site a couple of weeks ago, but this is my first post. I'm totally blown away by what info there is here and the knowledge that the members have to share. I've learned more here than a shop manual could ever teach. Thanks again. I recently decided to get back on two wheels after a 14 year absence and found an 82 xj650rj that wasn't running for $100. Since I grew up on my dads xs1100 I figured this might be the perfect fit for me. So far it's been a slow process but with all of your guidance I'm sure I'll get there. Thanks again in advance for your input and support.

No pics at the moment(technical difficulties) As soon as I work out some bug. I'll post some. I got the bike running and took my daughter (3 yrs) for a joyride (about 10 feet in my fromt yard) now I can't get her off it. Figures since I took my first ride with my dad at age 4. Thank again for the welcome. I'm sure I'll have some fun newbie questions soon.

Greg, I picked some kroil up already, but haven't had to use it yet. So far all my nuts and bolts have come off and on reasonably easy.

Welcome; I strongly recommend you track down a FACTORY service manual for your bike, as both the Haynes and Clymer offerings suffer from omissions and worse, inaccuracies.

Then go through the entire "maintenance" section item by item leaving NOTHING out. Replace everything you find that is rotted or crumbling or worse. Plan to replace pretty much any gasket you disturb. Change ALL the fluids including the brake fluid. When you're done you'll have one of the coolest things in the world: a fully functional 27-year old XJ. Then you can set about getting it looking as good as it runs. It's a very rewarding endeavor.

Hello and welcome Josh! I'm sure you have seen some of the words of wisdom that our group has posted. Here is another, get in touch with Chacal for all of your parts/books needs. Additionally, could you post your general location, a helping hand might be a short distance away!
