2 cables that i am questioning replacement and would like some advice.

first is the front brake cable. how do i know when i need to replace it? the reason i ask is because, it seems a little hard to pull back on it. it works and brakes, but i think it's gotten gradually stiffer on pulling back. should it be replaced or lubed. or is there an adjustment? or is it supposed to be like that (not sure since it's my first bike and no point of comparison.)

second cable is the throttle cable. i noticed that the end of the cable that goes into the throttle control on the handlebar is broken and the bare wire is exposed on the inside. it seems to work okay, but i have noticed on cold days it seems to get stuck. for instance, i'll pull back on the throttle, and when i let go, instead of shooting back to normal idle position, it slowly creeps back. i thought it was due to something else, but after inspectiong the wire, i'm not sure anymore. i guess i could tape it up, but although i am trying to spend frugally, i don't mind replacing items if you guys think its a safety issue.

sorry for the long post, just wanted to be accurate in my description.

    thanks!!!

I would immediately lubricate the throttle cable, and replace it SOON before it either breaks or sticks on you.

According to my references your bike has a front DISC (hydraulic) brake. What front brake cable are you referring to?

He probably means the front brake hose -- essentially if you've still got the stock black rubber brake hose(s), then YES, you should be looking at replacement.

Having said that, handle effort doesn't normally get harder when the hose is wearing out - it usually gets softer.
If it's getting tighter, I'd say you probably need to be thinking about a caliper and/or master cylinder rebuild soon.

And as Fitz said - if the cable is showing, it's time for a replacement. Lube it to keep it working till the new one arrives, but you sure want to be ordering one soon.
