So I ordered a valve cover gasket off of ebay for my 1982 XJ650 Maxim. It is just a paper gasket. Since then I have learned the ways of ordering from chacal and would never order from anyone else. Any who I ordered the cam plugs from him and was just checking my haynes manual and it says that the YICS models (which mine is) uses a moled plastic gasket with the cam end seals integrated in. So can I use the paper gasket with the separate seals ok?
    PLEASE HELP

I have an '81 xj650 (non-YICS) which uses the paper gasket and cam plugs. The mating surfaces of the valve cover and head are flat and smooth. I believe on the YICS engines the valve cover has a groove in it that accepts the rubber gasket. I don't think the paper gasket will work on the YICS valve cover.

Hopefully someone who knows for sure will chime in here.

Yeah I haven't actually pulled the cover yet but I think it does have a groove. :( So I think I'm just gonna pull it and if its not too bad just put some High-Temp RTV in the groove and around the end plugs and re-use the old one. Since I already bought a paper gasket and the separate seals. Bummer!

Rex, put down that wrench and step back from the bike!! Just Say No! Do NOT use that paper gasket with the YICS style valve cover. The cover is shorter! Death and destruction are sure to follow!!

And I don't even think the bolt holes are in the same places, either.........

Rex, you better order the rubber "donuts" that go on the bolts too. They are what actually do the work of pushing the valve cover down against the gasket/head.

The bolts have stop collars on them that prevent overtightening. If your "donuts" are all hard and compressed, the new gasket will leak anyway. You cannot tighten the bolts "further" to compensate.

While you've got it apart, you do plan to check those valve clearances, right?
