    Re: 92 XJ600

Welcome. PM Chacal for most parts - see his posts in XJ4EVER topic.

A good manual is a great place to start. You can check your generator by metering the battery. At above 2k rpm you should see about 14.5V or so.

Beyond that you can have a rectifier or diode issue. need ot see if charging is the problem then start working back.

You can check the brushes in the alternator, there's a thread around here outlining the max min lengths.

Death, you are not looking at the brushes. You are looking at the stator. The brushes are little rectangular silver gray doohickeys with a wire inside a spring. They ride on the commutator which is part of the rotor. There are usually only 2 of them. Look up alternator through Google and you should be able to find a picture. Better yet get a manual.

That model has a permanent magnet rotor. There are no brushes. Check idle voltage across three wires from it. From wire to wire not to ground. (3 combinations) Important for all to be the same AC voltage 15-20 volts or so. If good than change rectifier/ regulator assy. Check AC volts not DC volts from stator.
Older XJ models have brushes that make an electro magnet out of the rotor. This can be checked with a thin feeler guage outside of the cover by holding guage close to cover and turning on key. If it attracts guage to cover, rotor, and regulator part of rectifier are working. Regulator adjusts voltage to the rotor changing the amount of magnatism. Not output of stator.
This newer XJ600 regulates output of stator.
This is one of the few things I remember from the Yamaha schools I went to 28 years ago.
    Good luck.

Man, if you are able to that that much of the bike apart, you are able to fix it. You can buy a volt meter for about $15. it's easy to check. We can walk you through it. You need to re assemble it to test it.
