ok guys. "i" ruined one of my carbs out of three on my 550 maxim motor. i starting searching salvage yard across the us for a new set. i recieved a phone call two days later from a salvage yard, stating that if i gave them my old carbs, they has a set of carbs for me priced at 350 dollars. i amost threw up. i told the guy, no thanks, i can find a set for 80 bucks. was he selling me something else? or was it a scam?

I don't know what the laws are in your area Loolagigi but here in California, a core charge is common (not all bike yards do it though, but all car yards do).
$350 for a used set is not a reasonable price. Tell the nice man politely that you are not interested in being overcharged and let it go at that. If he wants the sale, he will haggle. Otherwise, cut him loose and go find a set that is more reasonably priced (like $80).
Has anyone gotten back to you on a replacement body?
    Have you pinged Chacal?

    which carb is it?

while i cant confirm i was told that each carb in a rack is a specific carb and shouldnt be intermixed. i dont know this to be a fact but let me know if YOU know...

Two of the bowls have drain screws pointing left, two point right. The butterfly shafts are different. Otherwise, they're the same.

Don't forget the fuel rail. 1 and 4 have a plug on the left/right side respectively.

I got a nice rebuildable set of 4 on ebay for my xj650 for $65 + less than $10 shipping.

If the set he quoted were guaranteed to run out of the box with parts replaced as necessary, bench synced and ready to install then the price is probably not too bad.

I got TWO spare racks for my 550's off eBay; one relatively nice and definitely rebuildable for $55, and another rather ratty set for a whopping $18 that's mainly for parts.

Remember all the 550s (Seca and Max) use Mikunis so it doesn't matter which bike they come from; there are a couple sets up on eBay right now for the 550.

You could also contact Clint at http://www.motolane.com/ and see if he still has the rack of carbs from the '83 Seca 550. I have NO IDEA how much he would want but he's good people.

i called a junk yard here in Michigan to find out a price on a 650 motor and they told me 650.00 I asked if that was for the whole bike they said no just the motor no guarantee and a compression test would be more. I hung up on them.

Ah NZXj. Must be the price of living in Paradise! So, is it starting to cool off as you head for the Autumn season?

NZ, You wacky southern hemisphere types make me smile! Just remember all the doo doo that came our way about the snow being on the ground too thick and the air being too cold to ride! It'll probably come back at ya!

I'll bet when he said 26 he meant CELSIUS which is a bone-chilling 78F.
