Ok, got my mufflers, took one of the olds ones off...hummmm....that seems a bit bigger than the 1 7/8" I measured on the header.....matched up one of the new mufflers and PRESTO they are the same diameter...

Now comes the UH?!?! part. Was I supposed to get a muffler with a larger end diameter than the header like the old mufflers evidently were...or is it ok to spread the....um....tines on the new one to fit over the header and clamp it down?

Sigh..... I hope this is a clear enough question....I feel like sitting here and drooling....

If it's close, spread 'em and clamp 'em. As log as they will snug down on the collector output you should be fine. Do you have the proper clamps? you will probably need them in order to bring the tines down correctly on the output pipe. A stainless steel hose clamp will likely not have enough force to secure the muffller to the output.

    The end is in sight!

I am not sure about the 650 since it has a crossover rather than a collector, but the 750 has a copper insert that seals the muffler to the collector. This would explain the larger diameter. The copper insert fits over the end of the header pipe and the muffler fits over that. So check the inside of the old muffler and see if it is in there.

I have the clamps from the old mufflers and the clamps that came with the new ones...so I think Im covered there...Im just worrying about preventing any leak by.

And Blue, there was no copper insert...

I just tend to worry when I get unsure about something.....I may just take it to one of the local muffler shops to see if there is something they can do, this is something Id spend the money on to have done, since I feel I screwed up.....maybe.... :(

If the header and muffler are the same size I don't think just bending the "tines" back is going to work.
I don't think you will be able to get the muffler on far enough to seal/.
The slots will still be open at the end.
The new mufflers should be flaired at the header end.
The pipe on the muffler probably is 1 7/8" OD, you need it to be 1 7/8" ID.
A shop can weld what you've got now right up though.

you might be able to find a shop that can flare the end of the muffler for you, maybe make an adapter.

A muffler or auto repair shop equipped with a pipe bending machine can "puff up" the flanges for you-- no welding required, you're only looking to gain a small amount.

WHEW! Thanks guys, I am going to go to a shop and see if I can get it flaired. Sometimes I feel foolish for not thinking ahead on this stuff...

Excellent point I didn't think of having the shop flair the end.
    Good minds at work.
