I found an inline filter that works perfect on our XJs. I have tried to fiind one that fits just after the petcock, but most are kinda awkward to make fit just right. I found one in the Dennis Kirk catalog that works perfect. It's an L-shaped filter that fits right where the gas line makes the bend down to the carbs. It's part number 18-2519. It's the one that has the inlet side horizontal and the outlet vertical, so it makes the turn down to the carbs and takes the bend out of the fuel line.
I drove out to the store yesterday and bought one ($2.99) and installed it when I got home. Perfect fit.
I haven't had the chance to get a photo of the installation, so I'll get one if anyone is interested in seeing it. >PD<

Funny, I rode over to a cycle shop here in Katy yesterday and picked up 2 for the XS11. They do fit just right!

I guess I didn't mention it but I also have an inline shut off valve just behind the petcock first, then the filter.
My petcock leaked last year with the bike shut off and I didn't feel like rebuilding it, so I just added the shut off inline to keep the gas from flowing when I shut it off (works for me) I had limited room for a filter after that. This way I have room for the shut off valve and the filter inline. I wanted it to fit without the anything rubbing and it worked out pretty well. I knew they made them and finally found one that's small enough to fit in there.

I rode over to a cycle shop in town and picked up a small clear plastic fuel filter too. It was the only kind they sold and it was too small to fit the fuel line.

Painter- Thanks for the heads up on the Dennis Kirk filters!

Wow painter that looks fancy.... i bet it cost more than $4 for that one .... i picked my 2nd filter up at Tractor supply its actually a bit over sized and is perfectly clear, the first one i used from autozone was clogged in a week.

    Mindnightblu,
Well I'd say if your fuel filter is clogged in a week, you have gas tank issues (dirty or rusty?) Atleast your fuel filter is doing it's job, so that's a good thing.
The filter I bought and posted there is $2.99, but I suppose you have to add the cost of shipping.
Yes, there are alot of filters out there that would work for you, but there's not much room to install them. I wanted one that had the inlet/outlet at a 90 degree angle to make the bend down to the carbs instead of having the fuel line make the bend.

This is true i did have feul tank issues that were unexpected.... not just that but the other reason i opted out of this type was for the cleaning surface area after having seen the first filter completly clogged beyond the point of clean and re-use, and the replaceability factor. i can always pick up another in 15min if i need to. as far as the "bending of the fuel line" I replaced mine with transperent blue fuel line and trained it to make the corners with a little heat. i suppose if you wanted to you could buy a fuel grade 1/4 in 90 deg bend but i see it as a bit unnecescary if you can train the line then you have less cost invested , about the same ammout of time .... no corners to make :)
i used a little bit extra hose when installing my filter and it rides un strapped under the tank next to the air box. it was great when trying to tune the bike having just enough line to have the tank sit over the battery.

I also have an inline shut-off valve installed on mine, so adding a straight inline filter couldn't be done in my case (no room) With the shut off valve in there, there is no room to put a filter between the valve and the bend, so that's why I needed one that was 90 degrees, so it would fit. If I use a straight inline filter, the bend in the line is too sharp and restricts the flow somewhat. This 90 degree filter just makes things work better and look alot neater.
