So i tried to start my XJ700 for the first time in a month. No Bueno. Wouldnt turn. All my lights turn on when I turn the key. Blinkers, ect ect. Fully charged battery. Carbs primed ect. And nothin.
My oil light comes on though. Comes on and stays on until I let go of the START button. Clue? Maybe. Thought you guys might be able to help with that. And yes, I've flicked the emergency shut off switch. Its not that unfortunatly.

Clean & tighten the leads to the battery & the connections on the starter relay.

Does it click when you push the button? Does the headlight dim? Any hint that it is trying to turn over? If none of the above, it could be the starter solenoid. Try shorting across that with a screwdriver you don't like and see if it turns over. My starter was sluggish until I cleaned out the starter, replace the brushes and cleaned the terminals on the solenoid.
It could also be the sidestand relay, or one of the switches that controls the sidestand relay. Unplug it and see if that helps. If that works there are other things to check. My dirty sidestand switch caused intermittent problems with the relay.

Disclaimer: I've only been working on my XJ700 for a year and a half, so I am by no means an expert. Just sharing what I've encountered. Good luck.

Bypassed the relay with a heavy gauge wire. SHE WORKS! First time i've heard her work! Horray Maxine!! So I've got a problem with the solenoid or something. Loose wire, or maybe I need to clean the starter out like stated. I'm freakin stoked!

Huh.. For some reason I dont think That's the one I jumped with the wire. It was the black wire next to it.. I'm PRETTY sure. I would go look but I gotta head to work.. in my stupid Taurus and not my bike. I'll look into it when I get home. Thanks guys!

wasnt there somone one her telling everyone to replace that $75 yamaha part with a $8 lawn tractor solenoid. ..... hmmm let me see if i can find the post

SLKid - if you cant get the ebay one check in with chacal .... the yamaha original will last you alot longer..... the lawnmower part will be a good "test" solenoid while you work through the rest of the bike.

The oil light coming on when you push start is the self-check of that circuit. If it doesn't go off after it starts, then that is a problem.

Yeah it goes off after it starts. Its only when I hold the START button, like trying to turn it over via the button. I'm go out and take a pic of where I jumped it. The black wire, whre I jumped it, leads to the starter itself, and the red leads to the battery. Maaaaybe its just that Solenoid. I really hope so. That'd make things sooo much easier. I'll go take a pic now

I've looked inside and the silver containers (Which I'm assumeing are fuses. I'm no electritian) Looked fine. Is that what you guys are always talking about replacing??

That be the solenoid. If you got it to jump by crossing those two terminals, then you need to put a new solenoid in.
