After ten years, I am regretfully selling my ‘85 Yamaha Maxim 700 with 26K. This is a perfect project bike. Inspected last season. Brand new Dunlop 404’s. Brand new battery. Official shop manual. I am the second owner. The bike has been garaged always, except for one year. I have regularly changed the oil and filter every 2k, and/or each spring. I have used only high test petrol with every fueling except one or two times.

Up to a year ago, this machine has given me nine seasons of quick, smooth, trouble-free riding. The bike ran excellent as usual in the spring of ‘07, until I was forced to park it for two months due to family emergency. When I fired it up again later that season, it did not run the same, it had a slight hesitation when accelerating. Believing it was a result of fuel breakdown, I ran a couple tankfuls of fuel system treatment, and rode the rest of the season. The hesitation remained. Last spring of ’08, I tried Yamaha's fuel system shock treatment. Still no improvement. The bike eventually began running rougher, until it finally quit last summer.

I removed the carbs, and spent approx. 20 hours inspecting and thoroughly cleaning the units inside and out with carb cleaner and compressed air. They looked to be in very good shape, and now they are sparkling clean. The problem seems to be oil-fouled plugs. The local shops here will not work on the bike due to its age. They advised that it may need minor work like new rings, or oil seals, but, possibly a major overhaul. Since the bike ran beautifully for so many years and suddenly developed the problem, I believe it is something minor. However, I have no one to do the work, and I don’t have the experience, nor the time or space to go into the cylinder head myself. So unfortunately, I have no choice but to let my bike go.

The machine is in very good condition as the pics will show, and will run excellent as usual when repaired. Through the years it has needed nothing but a clutch cable, fork seals, a speedo drive, and a valve cover gasket. I am asking $750. The $300 Dunlops are brand new. Even if the bike cannot be fixed for a reasonable price, the many, many, usable parts are worth much more than $450.

You may contact me by phone (518) 761-2646, ask for Mark, or e-mail (mitsutim@hotmail.com). Thanks for looking, and happy ridin'.

Can you meet me halfway, maybe in Philly. North Carolina is a little far away.

If only it could run to Florida. Traveling to NY this summer and I've been searching for a decent Maxim to go with the SECA.

Problem is not getting up there, I'm already doing that, its getting back...the bike doesn't run right now apparently. (At least not 1000+ miles worth of running right now).

Wow that is a nice looing bike do you know if that is an original color? I haven't seen an 85 in that bright red before my X was originally a much darker metallic red.

They called it "super red" I think
My buddy has the same color...and I have a rear fender on the parts shelf the same color.
I don't think they made any Xs in the super red tho.
Chacal??? Mr. official paint color authority?

I just realized something. The photos are from last year (notice the green foliage)....not green in upstate NY yet!

The 700 is now resting quietly next to my 650. They look so cute taking naps next to each other. They may go out and play later on today.
