    Hey folks,

as per a previous post of mine, I discovered that the foot pegs were adjustable on my 83 xj750. I moved them forward and adjusted the shifter and brake levers accordingly.

Today I was going to take it for a ride, and noticed that I had difficulty upshifting from 1st... figured I just didn't have it set right so that I had the leverage to pull it up...back to the garage and I guess I flipped the mount that wasn't pulling the linkage straight. So I put it back on the right way.

For some reason, my gears are all messed up. I'll 'downshift' as far as I can go, and it's like in 4th gear. the neutral light comes on when to me, in the natural way of shifting, it shouldn't. I'm at a loss as to what I did to screw this up, any help is really appreciated!

I'm guessing from your description that you have put the rear bracket on upside down.

Correct me if I'm wrong but to go up gears you are pressing the lever down?

I presume you took the whole gear assembly off to adjust the height?

Remove the rear bracket and rotate so that the connecting rod is on the bottom. Front lever should have the connecting rod on the top.

Let us know if this works.

Grr Sno, I hate these no edits. As soon as you post you think of something else.

Also make sure the rear bracket is mounted about 90 degrees to the connecting rod. Adjustment to height should be done mainly by adjusting the length of the connecting rod.

heh, that would make sense of how it's acting, if I put it on upside down....I swear I looked at it and made sure I put it back on the same way..... anyway, I tried taking a photo of how it's together now.

while taking the photo I thought the lever was on wrong, as it comes over the footpeg, rather than under it like the rear brake lever...then I check the gallery here and saw other bikes had it coming over the top. Guess I'm showing my ignorance here, but I'm not really sure how to correct it...I know it's gotta be simple.....

    bartman,

Your problem is exactly the same as I was having earlier today.

It is upside-down, Just pull the part off the spline going into the transmission and literally turn it over so that its the other way.

Its a simple fix, but I will say, definately a bit confusing to diagnose when it happens.
