I'm pulling out of Decatur, AL on Sunday heading down to the Gulf coast. Solo trip. This will be my first trip over 200 miles.

The bike has over 40000 miles and runs great. Replaced the plugs 4 months ago, along with new carb boots. New tires have less than 500 miles on them. My wife made me replace the battery today. :) She said it made her feel better knowing I was leaving with a fresh battery. I guess that means she cares!

I'll post a picture when I get back.

    Ya'll wish me luck!

God are you going to have fun!

If you get the chance, either going or coming back, try and go through Eufaula, AL....you can take 82 East out of Montogomery and go straight to it.....or come back 431/231 North out of Panama City.....lots of restored really beautiful Civil War era houses right in the center of town.

    Huge lake, too.

    With gators..........

According to my dad who lives in P.C., it's supposed to rain like hell there on Saturday, so please be careful.

Gods do I miss the South, I've been living north of the Mason-Dixon line for far too long.

I do have a question before I leave out tomorrow. Most of my trips on my bike have been local and back roads, never churning much more than 4800 rpms on those criuses. My trip tomorrow is almost all interstate, my bike churns out 5500 rpm at 70 mph. This should be okay for roughly 5-6 hrs.......right?

    Thanks

Shouldn't be a problem - these engines are made for it. You are gonna want to stop for a break every now and again anyway.

Have fun and be safe - sounds like a great trip.

    Thank you!

I usually fill the tank every 100 miles or so. That will give me time to stretch my legs and such.

700 mile round trip is just getting warmed up! Take your time, enjoy the sights, stop when you want to and have fun. Heading out on a long trip is what biking is all about for me. Unless you have an Ipod or Mp3 player, remember that the last song you hear before taking off is the one that's going to play over and over in your head. Make it a good one!

Re: Leaving Sunday on a 700 mile round trip, wish me luck...

    Back from my trip.

The bike ran great. Cruised the interstate for 592 miles. The only problem occurred 113 miles into the trip, the speedometer blew. It started making a grinding noise then the needle spun completely around and snapped off. The grinding noise continued and the resulting vibration caused the tach to fluctuant wildly. I spent an hour in a bank parking lot taking apart the speedo to see what broke and if it might be possible to fix. No good, its fried. So I disconnected the speedo cable and rode the rest of the trip with nothing but my tach to gauge my speed. I ran the entire interstate at 5500 - 5800 rpms. I averaged 39 to 41 mpg at that speed.

I think before I take another long trip on the bike I might want a windshield added. You get pushed around somewhat at interstate speed (70+ mph). A little tiring after a few hrs in the saddle. I am glad I invested in a gel seat pad though.
