I made my own YICS Tool and it worked just fine!!

Sorry but I wouldn't wait for months to sync my carbs.... I wanted to ride NOW and couldn't wait!

Anyone else wanting to do this can click on the link below and get instructions

    http://home.westman.wave.ca/~jbe/YICS.htm

Mine cost me about 8-10 dollars and I didn't use the exact materials the specified but I did use their dimensions.

Sorry if this messes up someones side business but we are here to help each other.

This tool isolates the carbs on a YICS engine so that a person can synch each carb seperately and yet together.

actually, my stupid question would be what problems might require a good carb synching, and would I benefit from it even though my bike is running decent right now...

I'm still pretty new to this whole mechanical do-it-yourself thing you know....

well, if youve had your carbs apart or ever changed the sync settings then you might need to sync your carbs with a manometer or vacuum guages and when you do, you'll need to isolate your carbs to get a proper sync..... really makes them XJ's run good!
So what do you do there in Phx?
    I grew up there.
I lived pretty much all over that Valley at one time or another.

HvnBnd, the picture you posted the link to is in our archives. It has been around a few years and serves as a great DIY project. What alterations did you make in your assembly? I would have sprung the cash for the tool listed on our site if I had found it in time and at under $40, it is a steal. I don't do the work often enough to justify the expense (at least not at this point in time, keep hoping I land that dream job).

Thats probably not something I want to mess with...... yet

I'm a chef, I work at Pointe South Mountain Resort. I actually grew up in the white mountain (Show Low) and came down here to go to culinary school a couple of years ago.

I sync my carbs until all four colums of mercury look like they are hooked-up to the same intake port.

The result is ... 950 rpm's at idle that makes the bike run as smooth as a Rolex Watch. It's soooo nice to be able to stop at a light and put your hands on your hips and let the engine purrrrrrr ... while everyone else is blipping the grip to keep theirs running!!!

I have a really stupid YICS question: are the measurements for the homemade YICS tool the same for all XJ's? I have a 550, is the YICS passage the same length as a 650,750,900 etc.?

That is my understanding, but to be sure I measured the holes inside the passage to be sure and it was right.

I don't think the distance between the passages is the same ... but, I do believe that the tool is engineered to block air-flow and separate the carbs for tuning and testing. Yamaha issues only one tool to the tech's at their dealerships. That one tool is used straight-acrossed all the models and years.
