If anyone here is working on their valves I need a favor. Could you measure the outside diameter of the shim bucket? I want to cut a board to hold mine in order while the machine shop checks my cylinder head.
With the diameter I can bore holes with a forstner bit and tape the buckets in place and have them numbered by cylinder.

Hmmm....I think I can find one of those! Great tip and thanks Nick. I talked to the machince shop guy last night and he is willing to do my head along with his racing engines. I guess it's this weekend for the tear down. Wish me luck or better yet pray!

Praying tends to yield better results. Consider it done. Best of luck to you.

What work are you doing to your head and why? Just curious.

I am pulling the head and replacing the head gasket.
For the second time! At first I thought it was just an old
gasket giving way, since I got the engine from a salvage
yard where it had been sitting on the floor for about 10 years.
It was leaking oil last year so I waited until winter and
pulled the head and replaced the head gasket. It didn't leak for
1100 miles and on the return trip from the NTCC it started
leaking again. Now I will pull the head and have a machine shop check
    it for warpage and cracks.

I can tell you that the valve shims are 29mm diameter, if that helps.

When you do a top end job on an engine that has an aluminum head ... you put the head on ... graduate torque in the pattern ... 15 pounds ... adding 5 pounds each additional pass until you hit specs.

Then, you run the engine with your hand on the head until it heats-up to where you have to remove your hand.

Check the engine as it cools ... when the engine is still warm ... yet cooled-off to where you can place your wrist on the cam cover ... re-torque.
Use some Permatex Copper Spray-A-Gasket, too!
