I am going to go with an electric tach on my 81 xj650. Anyone have any idea on how to plug the mechanical tach cables hole on the engine so I will have no leaks?
    Thanks,
    George

If you're going to be removing the gear assembly in the head, I'd say your only real option would be to have someone weld the hole closed.

If you're leaving the gear in, you could just get a cap that will screw on to cover it, then put that on using red locktite.

Get in touch with a machinist and have them turn a cap with a flange for you. Be sure to include a relief for the o-ring!

or you could just use a handlebar end plug for 7/8" bars...worked like a champ for me and NO leaks...just tap it in with a mallet

I'm considering doing this as well - any other suggestions out there? Thanks.

Or, take the ferrule off your cable, find a suitable sized disc of metal or plastic (will a dime fit?) coat with gasket sealer and put the ferrule back on to hold it. The tach drive mechanism will still be hanging there but it won't leak.

MIKES XS sells block off caps for just that reason.

I bought one of he caps form Mikesxs and it works quite well. I should go to some locktite though I have had to screw it back down once.

I think I could do it myself no prob now - thanks for all the suggestions. But I think the $5 cap over at Mikesxs.net is the way to go! Quick question while the thread i hot - from what I've read this is simply just capping the drive, and wiring it up, right? Any tricks to this? Thanks again for all the help.
