Bike lock chain on left side of motor? Helmet/Seat lock?

    I just found an actual lock made by yamaha that looks like a regular bicycle chain lock? Is this rare? what is it for? Also how can i lock my seat so no one can get in it except me? is the helmet lock supposed to lock the seat? the only reason I ask that is because it says "Seat" on the opposite side of "Helmet"

    This lock is to lock your bike to say a post or something going thru the rear rim i think? Its not long enough to be practical, but cool to still have on your bike. I know alot of us still have the lock and chain. I do and the original tool pouch and tools in it under and behind the seat. I usually just lock the bars and thats it.

    How do you lock the bars? lol Is it like the standard "Huge turn of the key in the ignition to the left to lock"

    The chain lock you found is called a 'Power Lock' it came on different years and models, basically it tucks in a compartment right below the sidecover on the left(pretty sure) side. and you could pull it out, put it through the back wheel and there is a knub on the other side that it locks to.

    The seat 'should' lock down, you should have to turn the key (in the helmet lock) to the seat position to release the seat latch. Most of them however end up broken.

    I should add that on mine, when i turned the key to the right, my helmet lock opens. But when i turn it to the left, nothing happens. I says both seat and helmet on the each side of where the key goes in. I assume it is suppose to lock the seat, but mine does not as of right now.

    Have to press down and turn left. Be careful - all the way left also turns on tail light.

    Seat is locked in place by the helmet lock on most of the models.

    Ok... then mine don't lock the seat either. I've tried that. I wound up bumfuzzled. So I gave up.

    Be careful with the handlebar lock; there are two positions, one for "lock" and one for "park" (further) which leaves the taillight on. A lot of these bikes have the label worn completely away, here's what it's supposed to look like:

    for the bar lock turn your ignition off and bars to one side. press key IN and let go, then turn left till it clicks once. two clicks and you are in park mode.

    for the seat lock take your seat OFF. look at the back of the lock. put your key in and turn it all the way right then left and back right. if you see a pin moving in and out you have a functioning lock. but the lever on the seat itself tends to stay back too far and the hole in it misses the pin. try turning the key all the way left, put your seat on and manually push the seat lever all the way right. then turn your key to center and pull it out. try taking off your seat. of course it won't work if the pin is not there or fuctioning, same for the seat lever.

    Yep, that's how I ran the battery down the first time. Don't know why you would want to lock it and turn on a light, but you can...

    kt, What if it's a dark and stormy night and you have to leave your bike beside the road while you hitch a ride into town for ............. some gas maybe (shouldn't have left the petcock on reserve). Because it's dark(and stormy) you want to leave your taillight on so that traffic will see you bike. It's a parking light after all. And they can't steal it because the steering is locked.

    Oh, I knew there were people who would find a use for it, but typically you wouldn't want it on and it is very easy to put on in the middle of the day and not notice it. A warning light would help.

    By the way, did you have to walk far?

    And by the time you get back to your bike with gas, you had better bring a boost too, because it doesn't take that little light long to kill the battery :p

    HA! This is awesome! I thought that it didn't have a bar lock on it because all the other bikes I've had you would just turn it left... this one is tricky though... gotta push down! Thanks guys!

    It's standard for a lot of Yamahas I believe. I think it's awesome - but be careful. If you have NEVER used it, be very careful trying to use it the first time. It may be corroded and break, and cause all kinds of problems with your ignition/steering ability.

    Used the chain lock for the first summer until the nice Saturday morning when I decided to take off like a bat out of hell. Well the chain around the rim didnt hold up...

    Man I guess I should pay more attention to the ignition labels LOL!! the 85 does the the lock and Park and are marked as Fitz put a pic up of. And all this time I have been leavin her vulnerable to somebody walking off with her hehe. Now they'll have to walk in circles.

    Seems like the Maxim-X also has a different configuration for seat and helmet locks. On the Maxim-X the locks are on opposite sides of the bike. It seems from the discussion that for some (or maybe most of the rest) XJ's a single lock or single key-hole serves to unlock both the seat and helmet lock depending on which way you turn it.

    And yet something different. My 81 550 Maxim seat is held on with 2 rubber straps and the 'trunk' locks them up. The helmet lock is on the left side of the bike and that is all it does. It does have the bar lock and 'P' position on the ignition switch and they work flawlessly.

    Artie I guess I shoudl have mentioned that Lol!! yes the X has the seat lock on the right side(if sitting on bike) and the helmet lock on the left.

    Ding-ding-ding, we have a winner!

    The Euro countries have a law about leaving parking lights on when the bike is parked at curbside, and so all models got that little wiring "enhancement".

    They also had this cute little "parking light" miniature bulb inside the main headlight bulb that thankfully didn't make it over here............

    Ha! You beat me to it, Chacal.

    In the "old" countries of Europe with their tiny, winding streets that were made to be wide enough for maybe two carts to get through, it is a very handy thing to have that parking light. Cars have them too, but they only work the driver's side lights. The idea is to keep people from running into your parked vehicle during the night. I expect similar problems occur in places like Japan as well.

    Okay, so your choice in Europe is to have the bike run into during the night or become inoperable because the battery is drained?

    one would assume this in in town where you would be running in to eat, buy something and not parking overnight. at home they probalby pull them in off the street.(I hope)

    I believe it does. I think all bike have at least the handlebar lock, right guys?

    Either way, my 83 550 Maxim has the handlebar lock.

    there is not label on my ignition and i can't seem to engage any kind of lock. my buddy has a newer honda and to lock his you turn it to the left past the off position. How does yours work?

    Try this: turn your bars to the left, while turning your key to the left you need push down on the key, it should lock.

    when the key is in the OFF position, with the handlebars at full left lock, you press the key straight down and turn it further to the left to the "lock" position. A pin should appear out of the underside of the ignition switch assembly and engage a piece on the steering stem/forks.
