I'm looking to increase the size of my 5th gear sprocket on the bike to get lower rpm at cruising speeds. What kind of work is involved with changing that out?

Everything I've heard seems to indicate that changing out gears in your transmission would be an expensive and time-consuming modification. That's about all I had to hear to decide not to do anything like that. If I wanted to spend that much to get lower RPM's I'd just buy a different bike.

Why not change out your drive chain sprockets instead? That would be relatively easy and inexpensive. It would lower your RPM at all speeds, as well as your horsepower, but that might not necessarily be a bad thing.

I'll be switching out the sprockets on my XJ550 soon, I'll let you know how it goes.

from what I have read you would not onlye have to change out the 5th gear sproket, but also the 4th, and probably the 3rd to alleviate the gap that you would create by putting on a bigger sproket
