    Hey Guys,
I'm new to the site I just got my first 1981 xj650 Maxim off my brother we been running into a problem. The bike road fine two years ago his wife used to ride it then it sat for two years he pulled the tank off to have it painted. He only put the tank back on and new fuel lines when I wanted to buy it. Now the bike will start and run but only if yu rev it when it falls below 2000 rpm it dies and if you close the choke all the way it dies I have put 80 miles on it with 94oct. gas and put carb cleaner in it. We just can't get it to idle does anyone know the factory settings to the carbs meaning how many turns out on all the adjustment screws we played with them and now I'm not sure ware their at. I know should have counted before we started meassing around. After we played around with it this is what it does when you start it it revs up to 4000rpms by it self with the choke on runs for abot 5 seconds and dies. Even when its warm turn the choke off and it won't start. Oh yeah it has new plugs, air filter, oil filter, oil, please help I want to ride.
    Thanks everyone

You can turn the mixture screws until your fingers wear out and this problem won't go away.

Look in the XJ FAQ Suggestions section for the carb cleaning threads. This motorcycle has Hicachi carbs.

After they are spotlessly cleaned according to the tutorial, with no shortcuts or skipped steps set the mixture screws to 2 turns from the bottom. This will put you in the ballpark.

You might notice threads talking about setting the mixture screws at 3 turns. The later models had a screw with a finer thread pitch. The coarse pitch on your screws only needs 2 turns.
