Hi everyone, I am new here and so far have just been reading and absorbing XJ knowledge like a sponge here 8O . This is a awesome forum guys, thanks for all the info! I usually use the search but in this case I couldn't find a clear answer. Anyway, here is my problem - trying to figure how to connect the little vacuum hoses from the carbs. Let me explain it actually, because I probably don't make much sense :). My 1985 Maxim XJ 700 is air cooled, with Hitachi carbs and aftermarket air filters, pods. On the front side of the carbs I found little brass tubes that look like vacuum hose connections, these are right on the side, under the enrichment plunger, seems like there have to be some hoses there, but there ain't :(. So , I want to ask you, please if anyone has any info on this and can shed some light on it for me... As far as I know this is a XJ 700 specific. Anyway, any info would be appreciated.Just to mention, I have a .pdf manual of all the other XJs but mine...
I want to find out what to do because after cleaning the carbs and finally having the bike run, I get a funny effect - high idle after a short 30 min ride, it was a cold morning, about 35, and the bike started right up with the enrichment and then ran good, but in 10 min after riding, the idle would go up really high at stop signs and such, so I had tho always keep it in gear and stop while holding the clutch in first, otherwise with the revs up, I could not shift in 1st. Currently I have these vacuum ports plugged, as I have no idea what to do with them and because it wouldn't start or run at all before I did it.Carbs are cleaned, jets are stock, pipes are stock.

    Thanks!

They're supposed to be plugged. You use them to synchronize the carbs. Also, if you have a vacuum petcock, the #2 vacuum port goes to a vacuum line which is connected to the petcock.

No, not these, I know about the syncro ones, but they are on the carb boots, on the engine side. I am asking about the ports that are on the carbs themselves, front left side, brass tubes, the kind of look like the fuel intake, but are smaller, and each carb has one. Thanks for the reply, though!

My guess would be that they are for a CA model and went to a vacuum canister. The X had a similar thing; however, it is only one line and not on each carb.

If this is correct, the right thing to do would be what you did. That is plug them. Do you have the XJCD? The service manual for the 700 is on there.

If you are getting a high idle after warm, double check your idle adjustment screw. After that, start looking to see if you have a vacuum leak at the throttle shafts or anywhere else. Did you have a good clunk test after your cleaning?

No, don't plug them!, those four brass nipples (coming out horizontally on the left side of each carb, angle back about 45-degrees) are the bowl overflow tubes/vents..........just leve them open, originally they just had about a 12-14" length of black fuel hose attached to them that just sorta hung straight down towards the ground, creating a veritable hornet's nest of rubber fuel lines going every which-away............

On the CALIFORNIA-only 700 carbs, there is also an additional, smaller brass nipple that comes off of the left side of the #2 carb only, and points straight up, and this nipple is the one that accepts the vaccum line from the vapor cannister.......

Thanks for the catch Chacal. I only have two overflows at the top of the carbs between 1 & 2 and 3 & 4.

Alright guys, thank you very much for your replies, you have been really helpful. Just to clarify though, for everyone I am posting a photo from when I had the carbs out, unfortunately I don't have any from the right angle but I think this one will do:

#1 is one of the nipples I am talking about,I have them plugged right now each carb has one, and should I unplugg them and put hoses on them?

#2 is what I believe the fuel overflow

#2 is definitely your fuel overflow. Is the #1 only on that one carb? I don't know if I don't see it on the others because of the angle.

No, #2 is on all of them, but from this angle can be seen only on this carb, I just don't have a better pic, and it is raining out and I don't want to unwrap the bike to take another photo but I will as soon as possible. I just want to find out what to do with these before I attempt any further adjustments on the bike.
Thanks again for the info JoeFriday77 and chacal!

+1 on chacal's comment. The #1 is the vent and #2 is the fuel drain. They have black hose on them normally, but all they really do is vent the carb, so you don't necessarily need anything on them. If all is well, nothing should come out except air...plus the hoses would just dump on the engine anyway, so there's no real point except to make it harder to get the carbs off. Don't plug them though.

ok, I will unplugg them. BTW , do you guys think this might have contributet to a severe engine flood I had yesterday? To the point where gas was spraying from the exhaust? The bike ran fine as it was, but yesterday I could not start it, then the battery gave up(I suspect it needs to be replaced), then after numerous tries it started with "juice"(jumper cables) from my car, but I had to keep the throttle about 75% open just to keep it running at 1500 rpm and it sputtered and ran very unstable and think only on 2 cyl maybe, so I didn't even attempt to ride it. Now even if I didn't check the plugs (i don't have a socket that fits, can anyone give me the correct size, pls ) I think it is flooded, so after it stops raining, I will have to change the oil, see if the plugs need to be gapped, or replaced and charge the battery and then I will try to start it again. Any tips on where to get an oil filter from? Do only Yamaha dealers have these, or I can get it at Autozone and such?
As for oil I will try Rotella, read a couple very happy posts about it.

Thanks for all the input guys!
