I have a petcock that has the long plastic piece that goes into the tank, but the screening material is shot to heck. Does this need to be somehow replaced or can I deal with that simply by installing an inline filter?

Better to replace it, more filtration means better filtration.

If you remove that filter entirely, you will no longer have a RESERVE feature on your petcock, RESERVE and ON will be one and the same.

Follow up question, I have a new filter and it is snug but I am sure it will fall out after some bumps, I don't want to put something on it like the manufacturer did, I've had this bike sind 82 and when I pulled it this year, first time ever, it was covered with some brown gunk, which would not come off and you couldnt see through it so I am sure fuel was having a hard time passing through it. Any advice what to put on filter to hold it in place?
