Fitz just posted about a guy who will rebuild your carbs for you.
He uses an ultasonic cleaner for "like new clean"

I just got one but have not really tried it on much, I need to get some aluminum safe cleaning solution.

I sent an email to the makers of "simple green" they said it could be used in a sonic cleaner but recommended the Simple green HD which is a different variant I guess that is aluminum safe.

Simple Green is aluminum safe -- used it on the bike engine, and aluminum car engines for years with no ill effects.

My understanding is that the HD stuff is just "heavy duty" - ie a bit more concentrated.

I'd say try it with a scrap piece of aluminum and see what you get -- I suspect it'll work just fine

Remember that these carbs are not "real aluminum", they are an aluminum alloy, probably zinc, and probably a pretty high proportion of zinc at that.

It's the zinc that reacts with many chemicals and discolors the material.

I had some marine aluminum cleaner, that would turn pure aluminum into a blindingly bright finish, and turned the carb bodies a dull, black-ish gray, after only about 5 seconds immersion............

Used it on my carbs with vinegar. It took FOREVER and 3 weeks to clean them. Later i used the ultrasonic jewelry cleaner from wal-mart ( @ the jewelry counter) and it works very well.

I got the heated ultrasonic cleaner from harbor freight.
You gotta get it hot to work.

Someone on the forum used baking soda to soda blast his carbs and they looked great.

I painted mine with VHT roll bar satin black epoxy paint and cooked them with a heat gun. They came out nice and still look good after a year.
