If you go with straight pipes be prepared to rejet the carbs.

My 81 550 maxim has a kerker header on it with a shorty muffler. It's so loud if I don't wear earplugs I get a headache.

No advice, just a request that you reconsider the straight pipes.

They don't help power, but they do irritate people and generate some bad PR for motorcyclists in general.

Why not a quality tuned pipe that will increase power and give you a throaty roar, without rattling the windows when you go by?

    Just a thought...

    Regards,
    Herb

That is what I am looking for actually, do you have any ideas, or locations on where to find these pipes, I don't want the rake though, I would like them to come straight off the downpipe, so they are level with the ground...
    Thanks

As I understand it, most well equipped and experienced exhaust fabricators can whip out what you are looking for rather easily. I will chime in on the rejetting and noise concerns as well. They will be important to you and your machine!

I see from your new signature I got your nickname right! Just a guess...

Sorry about the soapbox sermon. Down nere in the South "straight pipes" means open exhausts, so that was my immmediate thought of what you were talking about. After re-reading your original message I realize you were talking about the angle of the pipes, not the absence of a muffler.

I'm not familiar with all of the replacement exhausts out there, but I think most of them are upswept. I know there are "slip on" mufflers readily available, so if an exhaust shop could straighten the adapter coming off the header pipes, you might be in business.

Are you going for a 4 into 1, 4 into 2, or 4 separate pipes?

    Good luck-
    Herb

Soirry for the misunderstnading in the way I worded my post, what I meant was A strightened pipe, to make the exhaust level with the ground instead of the upswept look. So I guess Ishould of worded it as a strighten or level exhaust set of pipes. I am not looking to run Open pipes, I am looking for a level exahaust to change the look of the bike a little bit. Thanks again and sorry for the confusion.

Just a quick look through the Chaparral catalog, only one I see is the Mac 4-1, which is definetly angled up. If they had a 4-2, those are closer to level with the ground, but I don't see those for the 550, so looks like it might be a custom job.

I wanted the same and ran into problems with the centre stand and side stand interfering. By the time you clear those you're already up pretty high.
My hope was to change the looks, but also to make room for saddlebags. I am going to settle for shorter saddlebags and live with it. I did change the exhaust for a black set which I happen to like better and which might be slightly more level with the ground, but not much. It took a lot of cutting and welding and fussing around but I am happy with the result.
