550 Cams

    OK, so I'm reassembling my bike and I go to put the cams back on - so far so good up until I need to put a wrench on them to turn them to their alignment marks. I don't have a wrench big enough for this - the largest I have is a 19mm

    Anyone know what size wrench I need to use on my cams?

    Also, anyone know what size hex driver is needed for the chain tensioner bolts in the back of the engine?

    The big cast-in hex on the camshaft takes a 22mm.

    If you're talking about the cam chain tensioner, it is attached to the back of the head with: On the right side, a "normal" bolt with a 5mm head.

    On the left side, it's a strange knurled NUT but it has a hex in the end, it takes a 6mm. WHY they did it this way I don't know, nor do I understand why that nut is knurled.

    Bigfitz, much appreciated info.

    I didn't remember my manual providing any kind of list of the tools that would be needed to work on one of these bikes beyond the obvious and specialized things like the Valve Shim Bucket hold down tool, manometer, and so on.

    I'll see if I can scam up a 22mm open end wrench and a 6mm Hex driver.
