I'm not a mechanical minded person at all! I tried taking my bike to a few shops in boston, but there's seems to be a very annoying trend I see going on. A) Shop will only work on harley/cruisers or B) shop won't work on bikes over 10 years old.

I dont need any major work. I bought it 5 days ago and put 80 miles on it already. From what I can tell, I need the falling:

    Tune up w/ oil change
    Rear tire
    Chain tighted
    carbs cleaned, possibly synced
    fluid levels checked (all types)
There's a lot of rust erosion on the exhaust system so I will probably need to replace that at some point

This doesn't have to be done all in one sitting of course!

I'd also like to turn it into a naked bike, but I first need to get a new headlight and bracket for it.

I'll pay an hourly rate for a mechanically savvy person to come and help with this. I'll pay for parts, but will need help figuring out what I need and where to get it.

    Thanks!

I can help if you want to come to New Hampshire.

Oil change - easy. Most likely.
Rear tire, gonna have to get that mounted somewhere. No biggie.
Chain tightening, never done one on a bike like this. But shouldn't be hard.
Carbs cleaned and synced... well that's a big deal. Just time really.
Talking ~10 hours. We could half-@$$ it for much less hours lol.
    Fluid levels, easy.
Exhaust, if the header bolts don't want to go, it'll be a pain but doable.

PM me if you want to come up sometime.

How far up in NH are you? I have relatives in Salem and Hudson and could go that far. I could have parts sent to their houses and just work on the bike there.

I have the service manual too just fyi. Should make things go pretty smooth.

What takes so long with the carbs? the cleaning or the syncing?

I honestly know how to change oil, tighten chain and check fluids, but I have what I call the "anti green thumb". Everytime I touch a bike in a mechanical way, it just breaks!

Oh and the current tire is 130/70 18. I know the 130 and 18 have to be on the new tire, but can the 70 change? I see a lot of 130/80 and 130/90 tires.

    I'll help too. :)

Salem and hudson are not far from either of us. salem would likely work better for doug, hudson is closer to me, but both are close.

the time with the carbs is the cleaning, it's a long process, but it's not too bad.

We could do all except for the rear tire. There is a shop near by that is very good and charges a reasonable rate (in manchester) if you (we) take the wheel off and bring it to them. about $30 mounted and balanced i think. not sure about the tire size on your bike, i know on my bike, there's not much room to go up any size.

Between the two of us, we've got everything you could need to work on these bikes.

Why do you need relatives when you have XJers?

    :)

We can work out of my friends shed. That's where my bike is right now, will hopefully be out on Wednesday.

If you hadn't noticed bluepotpie (andy) has worked on my bike with me, and I will be helping him sync his soon (and colortune)

Andy- I think he is the one that bought the bike with the tire too big already, I think he wants to go down to stock. Am I right?

Let us know what you think!

i think that 130/70/18 is the stock rear tire size for that bike. I would advise against getting anything else but someone else may chime in here and correct me if i am wrong.

    EDIT:

just looked at my rear tire, i bet i could go u a size in the second number (height) but certainly not in width (first number).

Haha, hey now. For all you know, I'm the best there is at jetting... maybe i'm just really slow at it. lol. Just gotta balance/sync and colortune, then we'll see how the jetting is. :)

Want to do it Wednesday? I'm going to have to set my floats, then resync/tune.

Think we're good enough to get both bikes done this week, BEFORE midnight? :)

Should be @ Geoffs by 6 this week :D
