I am going to buy a new exhaust system for my 1983 XJ750 Maxim to replace the rusted one on it right now. But i can’t decide weather or not to go for a the 4 into 2 or just stick with the 4 into 1 style. I recall hearing that the 4 into 2 may take away some of the bikes low end for high end. Also I fear that it may be to free flowing that I’ll have to buy a after market air box system, which I may look into, to compensate for the free flow. Also would the Mac 4 into 2 from a 650XJ work well with a XJ750?

If designed right, you shouldn't have a problem. However, I've had some problems with aftermarket products that I've used on bikes and cars in the past. For example: the need to remap, flat spots in power delivery (even after remapping several times), etc. I now try to stick with parts that are stock or as near stock as possible. I just don't have the $$$ to keep throwing at something to get it right.

Breton - you'd be the one best able to answer that ;)

Take a large can of tomatoes out to your bike and see if you can get it to sit where the oil basket is.

    ---

Remapping - if you get a different pipe you should do the carbs. It's not a big deal but it should be done. No two pipes will flow exactly the same.

    ---

MAC quality I've heard means they don't last as long as stock. Mind you a new stock system is crazy expensive so I'd buy a few MAC systems and live with ot...

You do not need to install pods, you just have to tune it with what you've got... that's a common setup.

You probably will take a soft hit on the bottom end, but you'll get it all back and some at the top end when it starts to breath.

Oh yeah I posted this topic awhile back a few weeks after I had gotten my XJ last year. Before the XJ most of my riding experience consisted of 250cc and 450cc dirt bikes. Alot of the riding down in South America mostly in Ecuador’s volcanic landscapes and dense rainforest. You can rent Honda CRF 250cc for around 30 bucks a day. But that aside the point and way off topic. But this was before I under stood back pressure and scavenging power which is the energy left in the hot exhaust gases to help increase engine power. Which can best be seen in the 4 into 1 exhaust system or in other words free horsepower. So when I get some funds together I am going to pick up a Jardine Motorcycle Exhaust Classic chrome 4 into 1 chrome muffler. The money I had set aside for this was used up after staying in Manhattan two days for a wedding it also ate and killed the progressive rear shocks fund but that another topic.
