Here it goes. . . I got the carbs back on my maxim x. Yeah!! right???

Well it starts, it runs rough. figured it would but not too rough. Needs oil change yet.

So I park the bike in the drive to look it over before putting it away and notice a drip. So with closer inspection, its gas coming out of the line that comes off the bottom of the airbox.

What could I have done wrong? The valve vents are not leaking gas, its just pooring out of the vent pipe out of the airbox.

    Any Ideas?

Do you have a float stuck open allowing fuel to flow throught ht e carb and then into the airbox? Not trying to insult did you turn thre petcock from Pri to on? Just something I went throught, hope it helps.

This usually means two things. 1. the petcock is leaking or in the PRI position. 2. the float valves are not seating either by means of a bad valve needle, trash in the seat not allowing it to close, corrosion around the float pin holding it open or the pin is bent holding the float open. Tapping the float bowls can sometimes release a stuck float.
Since you had the carbs off was it to rebuild/clean them? If so did you replace the float valves? I don't know what you mean by float vents. But I assume it is the float valves?

I had the carbs off to clean. I thought I had the float valves cleaned up pretty good. I didn't replace. (IM broke and trying to save money on gas by riding a MC to work.)

I had the Petcock in Pri to get bowls filled, but switched to on. It has stopped leaking, but the bike is off. I tapped the carbs to free the valves.

Im hoping some more solvent in the gas will clear things up.

But you would say that its probably a stuck float valve? Man I don't want to take the carbs out again. (thats the easy Part, putting the air boots on the darn carbs is a real pain in the rear.)

Buttttttt If I have to I have to. What do you think of the adding cleaner to the gas and letting it work?

I agree the air boots are ttoouuugghh to get on. What happens with the float needles is the rubber tip gets hard and won't seal. Good news is that you don't have to buy 4 $20 carb kits just to get them. Some places like oldbikebarn.com or motorcyclecarbs.com sell them seperate. Cleaner could help if trash is block the seat but what type of cleaner are you planning to use? Some cleaners should not be left in the carbs for extended periods. We use Seafoam here because we know it won't harm anything in the fuel system. Standard cleaning formula is half a can (8oz.) to one gallon of fuel. Pour this into an empty or near so tank and run the engine until the Seafoam gets through. The smoke coming out the exhaust will tell you that. Leave overnight and fill the tank with fuel then start and ride. If no improvement then the carbs most likely have to be pulled.

    More info:

I went out this morning. The jar I put under the bike is about full, so the dripping didn't end overnight like I thought.

This leads me to believe the Petcock is bad??? and a stuck float valve.

Im about to say F*** Yamaha and their making a bike for 2 years so parts are non-existant.

So any suggestions on next step? Should I look at the floats or petcock first?

Well if you want to see if your petcock is leaking simply pull off the hose and turn the petcock to on, there shouldn't be fuel coming out, unless there is vaccum. If there is then there is your leak, if there isn't then you know that youare headed into carb territory...

    Its my petcock.

I pulled the tank after posting and it leaks. I feel my floats are messed too. but petcock will prevent me from blowing up so Im fixing my petcock first.

Now to find a link that explains that procedure better.

Ok the tank has been setting on my trashcan for a few hours and not one drop out of the petcock. :?:

I think sloshing it around must of dislodged what ever was causing the hangup. Next to put more cleaner in the carb bowls and hope I don't have to tear down the carbs again. If I have too It shouldn't be so bad, but its been so long since I had the bike running good, Im getting impatient. 8O
