    Well, It's gotten worse.
Looks like it should be able to be replaced from the outside.
But the seal in all of the online diagrams, look to have a lip on the inside that would fit into a slot behind the seal.

Then It's got to be something along the lines of splitting the cases Eh ?

I had a similar problem with my FZR (same lipped seal). I tore that seal out with a small screwdriver. The replacement I ended up with had no lip and was a press fit (quite snug at that). I used RTV to ensure at least some resistance to blow-out. 2000 miles later, no issues...yet.

Replacing the original seal apparently will require a case split (didn't we discuss this already a while back?) -sorry-

That being said, maybe Robert's solution has some merit? If it DOESN'T work, you'd have to split the cases anyway, and if it DOES, problem solved.

I'm hopeful too, splitting cases is a chore, one I try to avoid where and whenever possible.

I got the numbers off of the seal. Going to try and find a replacement at our local bearing and seal provider.

I was thinking I could pull out(most of) the old seal and press one back in from the outside. Sealing it in with some YamaBond.

I would use some sort of hooked poky tool to make sure you get what's left of the old seal's trapped flange out so you don't have a disembodied rubber ring floating around your bottom end... it only appears to be trapped from one side.

    Sounds like a plan.

Well found a seal today. FYI an 82 XJ550 Maxim LH Crank seal is marked 32x45x7.3mm. All I was able to find was a 32x45x7mm.

I drove a hole through the seal with a sharp punch. Tried to use a cheapo harbor freight seal puller with a 2x4 behind it, broke it as it was cast... Ended up using my screwdriver to pry out one end after cutting through the seal and worked it out without damaging anything! :D The flange is trapped on both sides. Cleaned up the opening and after buttering it up with some Yamabond drove the seal in with a large socket just until flush with the outside. Ran it for a while in the garage as it's raining and no leaks! 8O

    Thanks ALL!

After thinking about it, I went back out there and staked it in 2 spots just enough to keep it there.

Sounds to me like it's fixed. That's a good one to know; as long as the seal is locked in place it should work fine long term.

And you didn't have to split the cases. +1.

Looks like this is a fix I need to try. I wonder how successful this fix has been.

Just wondering how your repair job was working? I am looking at doing the same thing.
