Well, thanks a lot guys! Due to my recent discovery of this site I have been inspired to bob my XJ! And I'm afraid I may never stop! haha....

The bike is a 1982 XJ650.... I would really like to to the hard-tail conversion like crath (FRICKIN' SWEET!) but I don't have the money right now and no welder so no good... for now I'm just gonna chop the back of the frame that sticks out because I really want to ride this season!

    On the list so far:

    Clean up the wiring Harness

    New Paint

chop the back of the frame

Lower rear end ( any ideas? can I cut the springs and get enough?)

    Pod Air filters

Exhaust ( I would like to just wrap the headers like crath, but will I have to re-jet the carbs?)

New Solo seat ( any ideas on an exact fit?)

    Please comment and give suggestions!

Oh and I really, really need to replace the carb-to-engine rubber boots as you can see in the picture! If anybody has them for sale or knows where to get them cheap PLEASE let me know!
Seriously thanks for the inspiration EVERYONE!

I can't get the pics to work so check it out here:

Rex, bike is coming apart good. A tip on posting your pics on here, you must resize them to 500x500 pixels or less, that is why your photos don't show.
Good luck & keep those progress pics coming.

Thanks for the photo tip! SO...I'm looking around about the pod filters and open exhaust....Do you guys think re-jetting to:
    Main Fuel Jets: #116
    Pilot Fuel Jets: #42

    would be good?
I'm in Northern Kentucky by Cincinnati, OH so less than 1000' above sea level.
Also how hard is it to sync carbs? I'm an ASE certified mechanic, but I worked at an Infiniti dealership for 5 years and never had to touch a carb!
    Thanks in Advance!

Rex, check the FAQ forum all your questions are answered there. Bench synching, vac synching, cleaning just about everything you need to know.

Good luck on the build, keep the pictures coming. Too bad you arent a little closer and we could work something out with doing your frame.

BTW, get with Chacal (Len) here on the forum. He has all the parts you will ever need. If he doesnt have it, you don't need it. You may have a hard time replacing the carb boots between the carbs and the head, the bolts tend to break off. Mine were pretty bad on my bike. I sealed and wrapped them and I havent had any problems.

So I have ordered parts from chacal! (awesome by the way) I cut the frame with a hacksaw last week and am in the process of painting, cleaning up everything. I've decided to forgo the pod filters ( for now) because I don't feel like messing with the carbs, they work. More pictures to come...
