I'm trying to tune carbs on a 82 XJ750. I'm told they have bean cleaned and they look clean but I have no idea what the idle, pilot screws and sync adj.screws should be at to keep engine running to start tuning. It will start and run rough with choke on but will not run with choke off. Thanks in advance. I'm sure someone out there will help.

I'm told they have bean cleaned? No, no you can't take anyone's word for something like that. Even if they were cleaned properly but it's been sitting for a few months they might need cleaned again. If it won't idle the idle mixture screws are in too far or the pilot jet is clogged.
Start with the idle mixture screws 2 1/2 turns out. All the butterfly valves should be synced so they are just starting to open past the first little hole in the top with the idle screw about one turn in past where they are fully closed (you have to take the carbs off to check that). This will give you a fairly close sync and idle setting. If the idle is opened too much or you don't have enough slack in the cable to allow the butterfly valves to close all the way it won't start. Now, after that's all done and it still won't run without the choke you'll have to take the carbs all off and clean and adjust them properly.
