Hey everyone - got a call from my nephew. his 650 ran very low on gas, so he switched over to reserve. must have had some crap get into the carbs in the process. Now it will only run with the choke on and won't go over 30mph. I told him to not ride it until we can look at it. I'm going to take the carbs off and try cleaning them before committing to doing a full rebuild.

Any one have any thing similar happen?

    Thanks,
    Doug

    Sounds like a reasonable conclusion.

There are some excellent posts here on cleaning the carbs. Make sure to give them a good read. The carbs need to be pretty darn perfect.

Check the tank for rust and deal with that if it is a problem. Then put an in-line filter in place if there is not one already there.

could possibly be a broken /disconnected throttle cable and the bike running off choke up to 30mph

Well, definitely not the carbs. haven't done an actual compression test yet, but based on the exhaust the right cylinder is very low. metallic noise from the top end, and oil in the vent tube (not just a little, a lot!)

I'm guessing valves. what's involved in a top end rebuild on one of these bikes? ball park costs for parts?

You may have a needle sticking in one of the carbs, causing it to flood the crankcase with gas. Check the oil level in the crankcase, and check for the smell of fuel in the oil.

a few too many guiness' to check tonight, but will do tomorrow!

not too hopeful though - very noisy. and when I check the carbs the needles were moving freely and the jets were all clear.

I am referring to the fuel metering needles that are actuated by upward movement of the carb float. If one of these needles is stuck open, gas will just free flow. I have a nearly complete 1982 Heritage Special (no title) for sale...it may be cheaper than an engine rebuild.

Cause vs. symptom just doesn't make sense here. If the bike was running fine, running out of gas wouldn't blow the motor up.

Take a step back and re-think. It's not adding up.

agreed on cause vs. symptoms. I wasn't with him so I can only speak to what he told me and what I'm observing. I'm thinking coincidence is playing a large role here...

danno - how much for the bike? (and yes, I did check the floats & needles individually to make sure neither are stuck.)
