I bought this bike late last year and just got it running. 1982 XJ1100J and I was looking at the title today and it says Yamaha XS 1100 NOT XJ. I checked the VIN on the sticker and it matches the title number. The frame has a stamped number near the Vin sticker that starts with 10 but it does not seem to be the VIN.

    Anyone know anything about this?

    Thanks

OK I looked at the Vin post and the Vin number is correct for the bike. Should I tell Motor Vehicle the XS should be XJ or just let them issue the new title as a XS?

My 650 Maxim is listed on the permit as a 2 cyl 750, when it is obviously a 4 cyl 650, (the motor and frame numbers match each other and match the permit) I asked the DMV about this, the girl said "does it matter to you?" I said no, she replied "then it doesn't matter to us."

SO I would say just leave well enough alone, as long as the vin numbers match.

Life will be much easier if you just choose to be ignorant.

If, 10 years from now, you still have the bike and it's become a status symbol, cult-classic, gotta-have bike, then it would be best to have the paperwork all in order, i.e. it says it's an XJ1100, rather than an XS1100 model..........

Sounds like the usual lazy DMV worker.
I wonder what your insurance co would think if your papers don't mach the bike if you submit a clam?

The insurance co would probably say “Um, we’re sorry we can’t honor your claim, there seem to be some inconsistencies with your title”

What kind of claim would you file on a 27 year old bike anyway?
It's $50 bucks for a title, is it worth it to you?

My buddy's XJ1100 also says XS1100 on the title. The DMV lady said there was no designation in their system for the XJ1100 for '82.. Only XS1100.

    weird.

As long as your insurance company has the bike down as an 'XJ' with the proper vin number than you would be covered. So I wouldn't worry about it

I would agree. It also depends on what STATE you live in, being in CT you might want to be careful. You might want to do a little research on exactly how big a can o'worms doing it either way would be?

The insurance IS the most important, but if fixing the title can be done easily, I'd do it.

You should see what a six-digit serial number does to the average paper-jockey. It can't possibly exist without 17 digits! (My Norton has a six digit serial number. Period.)
